I prefer DELL...
The service is good... Esp after sales services...
I heard HP lock up their hardwares so user cannot upgrade parts themselves..
but to go through HP for upgrades...
Thats hurts...

i choose dell because it's the only kind of computer i've ever tried XP. Nver tried HP, so I don't know what it's like. And it'd be bad to compare if I never tried HP. so... dell for me :)

I've always heared that dell's are crappy cause they can't be upgraded. I'm not sure which is better because mine is custom built.

I will say one thing, I don't like HP, I never will, I don't think there is one model that has both the power and the price, Dell you get powerful PC, at a low price, if you want one of the monsters they prodice it will be more, but still cheap for the power level of the PC you are buying, so basically, Dell, because they are fairly priced.

Well as some of you might know HP bought Compaq and as we all know Compaq SUCKS so Dell all the way. Even if it cost you an arm and a leg to buy Dell parts from them for your computer.

I've never used Dell, but I have used HP, and I like it. But, I am planning on getting myself a Dell, since I have heard great things about them.

Dell of course, it is far more cheaper than HP, and even better, while dell provides good-quality of customized computer

You can upgrade parts on DELL computers.. why not...
I've added another graphic card and CDROM for my PC...
And added a new RAM module to my notebook...
Both DELL and I upgraded them myself...

You CAN upgrade DELL parts...

But what I've heard about HP was that they lock up hardwares physically..
Such that you have to call a HP personel to open it up for upgrades...
Isn't that crappy..
It's our computer since we bought it and why should HP bother if we want to further upgrade..

Dell after sales services rocks...
They do parts to parts exchange if your devices doen't work right at your doorstep..
Of course that under warranty..
The new parts are upgraded from the old part furthermore..

Like i had a faulty 60GB hard drive and I exchanged and expected a 60GB same type of hard drive, instead to find out that I got an 80GB drive..
And my monitor too, I've got a CRT which became faulty a few years ago, and exchanged for an LCD screen...

So DELL all the way...

I have a Dell since 2001, I havent had to get anything fixed yet. The customer service is excellent, I got it built to my specifications. That speaks for itself. Now all I need is a memory upgrade. Isint there a lawsuit concerning Dell uping their advertised prices once prospective clients order on the phone?

For me, thats a quite easy question. I don'r really like dell pcs that much and I always have used hp, and I always will. I don'y really care about getting upgrades, I'll proably get a new pc every odd 6 years, to some people thats a quite long time, but I don't really care. Besides, I've heard bad things about dell and good things about hp, until just now, when this topic started up. So I guess thats why I use hp and always will, so its hp for me all the way :)

I have an HP branded PC. At the time it was a bargain, especially since it came with a 17" LCD flat panel... yum! Anyway, I have had no problems with it, and in contrast with most of the previous posters, yes you can upgrade and swap parts, I have sucessfully done it myself!

There were a lot of "support programs" that were preinstalled... interesting "support" since I ran my PC perfectly when they were disabled...

Customer service was good, they sympathetically replaced my HD even after the warranty ran out. The nice people.

I havent tried a Dell PC myself and so have no point of comparison... but there you go.

- Vacant.

I'm sorry, what are you talking about?

   Thu Apr 7, 2005    Reply

Well, I'm still young and my dad runs a computer software company. And he's always told me that DELL sucks... So I've always listened to him. But that's not my official opinion until I have the oppurtunity to actually try a DELL computer, myself. But I voted HP, anyways. :)

Well, those are the kind of people that know these things, so I guess your dad may be right.

I don't like dell, since you must order the pc.
I am a little sceptical...

What are you guys talking about locking up hardware?!?!?!?
I have owned both Dells and HPs, and have always upgraded them one way or another, whether adding disc drives, changing the hard drive, etc. In fact, the HP I currently have has really neat mounting solutions for the disc drives and hard disk - no need to unscrew, everything is latched in place with specially designed holders.

If you absolutely must use a branded pre-built PC I would suggest a Lenovo PC. Lenovo purchased IBM's PC dept and, in conjunction with their own technology, are making good computers at good prices.

Honestly though, I'd rather build my own =)

DELL!!!!!! DELL!!!!!! I use HP printer, and it always has ERRORS!!! DELLS!!

If it was out of the 2, then Dell all the way. I use Dell branded PCs at University, and their service, especially after sales is quite good. HP lock their hardwares, not suprisingly, because it got bought by compaq which does a similar thing.. and to be honest, its a good tactic, but wont get any sellers that knows computers very well.

But personally, I'd rather build my own computer if it comes to a overrall preference.

Both companies are quite similar in what you get and price but from what I hear Dell is more popular. You don't lose much from choosing one over the other. If I had to choose I would go with dell.

We currently have 4 HP computers in the house. One of them is almost 8 years old and still chugging alond with both Windows and Linux on it's paltry 4 GB disk. Our newer computers are state of the art, with Intel P4 processors, 512 MB - 1 GB RAM, 80 - 160 GB hard drives, and one (mine haha  ) has a LightScribe DVD burner, which I have to say, is state of the art. I haven't really had any problems with our HP computers that weren't my fault (I make almost any computer I come in contact with like mine). Only HP computers come with LightScribe drives preinstalled. I also like HP's systems better. Dell's Media Center PCs are the regular models with XP MCE instead of the regular versions, while HP has it's Photosmart PCs, and their Digital Entertainment Center living room style PCs.

I prefer hp, beacause they have nicer looking desktops and laptops as compared to dell. I mean do you see all the styles that dell has to offer for under a thousand? The cases are all crappy and gloomy looking, while hp has nice looking cases. hp also has lighscribe techolongy which I use all the time to burn my dvds. My desktop from hp cost 1,500 but I just go it recently and has no problem with fixing it or upgrading it. Hp never locked the comp to make it un upgradable

Both made with pretty average/cheap components, with limtied uprgrade ability. . . . and not to mention hearing bad thigns about boths customer service , for when these average components fail.

Lol. I bought a HP case, I put two pentuim 2 slot 1s in it. and when I put that thing that the hard disks and cd drives back in *bump* it only went in halfway..... So it had looked weird. <_<
Also.
In that same case the psu when !BOOM! and when i tried to put another psu in it wouldn't fit! The screw holes were in the wrong place since the psu wasn't made by HP.

All of those bad experinces make me definatly choose dell, they don't compress everthing like HP

... You can't upgrade HP PCs yourself? :-O My brother just ordered a new power-supply box, will he be able to replace his old one?

I have an OLD HP PC and it's still running well after 6 years. But I hear a lot of bad things about HP... I'm going for a Dell next.

I like the flexibility of Dell computers and how they look. There's nothing wrong wiht HP, they just don't appeal to me as much.

Of course nothing can beat making you own computer.
