Here i am going to show you how to create realistic rain effect using photoshop CS, this tutorial is suitable for immeadiate beginners too,
now the first thing you need is to get a good source image , i used this house which is shown at a kool angle and a dog lookin out of the window supposedly because it is raining

rain12du.jpg

dublicate the layer ( press Ctrl+J ) or just drag the layer to the create new layer button at the bottom of layers tool box ,

now go to Image > Image Adjustments > Levels and make your settings as shown in the image below ...

rain20ra.jpg

even tough the image we have is already dark ,that would have given the image the necessary dark appearance as you would have on a rainy day ..

the next step is to create rain
create a new layer (Shift+CTRL+N) with a white background and name it rain for easy reference later

now go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise and make your settings as shown in the image below ....

noise5gf.jpg

now go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur and make your settings as shown in the image below ....

blur6ef.jpg

now go to Image > Image Adjustments > Levels and make your settings as shown ....

levels7gb.jpg

go to layers pallet and change your blending mode to screen
well we got it raining already but i just want it to rain more heavily so make another copy of the rain layer, set the blending mode to screen on this layer too
and go to Edit > Transform > Rotate 180 degrees clockwise and reduce the opacity of the layer to around 82,
now with the topmost layer selected press Crl+E to merge the two top layers

now it rains but we dont have any wind , so our rain is not realistic yet , now go to Filter > Distort > Twirl and make the settings as shown below ....

twirl4hj.jpg

and here is my final image , it rains doesnt it ?? :)

That has to be the most amazing effect I've seen described so simply. Wow, I am going to use this on everything! Even pictures where you can see the sun :) Good job

Personally it doesn't look too realistic, the rain is at too much of an angle, maybe if it was slightly vertical.

looks good you should make a tut for the animated version

   Fri May 26, 2006    Reply

there already is 1 for the animated.
and the animated tut already has everything this post has w/ differnt settings
all you need to do is change the angle of the motoin blur to make it look like the rain is coming from a different angle.

That is amazingly simple and sooo effective. I'm impressed - I've tried a few different ways to get a rain effect going on and none look as great as this one. Thank you so much :)

I agree with dark_drgn, Since the background is at a paculiar angle I would try to match the rain with the angle of the background and then off set it just a bit.

Great tut. I will have to use it sometime. :)
I do agree that the rain angle should be adjusted a bit, but other than that, great!

Great Tutorial, this is actually a pretty good tutorial for other then just rain. I've messed around with a few of the settings and I have come up with some pretty interesting effects off of this tutorial. :)

Great tutorial thanks!

I always asked myself how to put rain in a rendered image, because I couldn't see any way to out rain in the scene with the 3d modelling program.
But like always, it's post processing with photoshop :)

Very nice effect, usually people just put this on their signatures. I've never seen it done on an actual image before, it looks really cool.

Wow, thats pretty quick n easy rain. I'll have to give it a try on some image i can find that could use some rain. Thanks for sharing that tip :)

That is a very usefull and cool thing. I could make some awsome signatures and stuff with that. would be great with some military signatures to give it that extra effect that some need. Good job on the tutorial. Keep up the good work.

Oh, woww. That's a really neat effect. I'll have to go and try that sometimes.

That's for putting up that tutorial!

i made that post sometime back , i noticed several people complaining about the angle the rain is coming , well if you look at the background you should notice that it is taken from an angle too and if i put the rain with a lesser angle the 3D effect which you now get wont be there and besides i have seen many a times rain coming from the same angle as i have shown when the wind is blowing strongly ,maybe because i come from a place where we get heavy rain :D , also if you are interested i may make an animated version too

Wow. That is so amazing. I, myself, have a personal disdain for a lot of Photoshop tutorials but yours was so simple, yet produced such a cool effect. Needless to say, I do like it :D

you can make an animation with this affect too. i think it just doesn't look nice to be honest, i mean it's great for beginners but once you really get into it you don't really do that stuff anymore
