I'm new to the web hosting scene... I was just wondering what all the folders in your account are for. There seems to be 8 folders already created for you:
.cpanel-datastore
.fantasticodata
etc
public_ftp
public_html
tmp
www
If someone can provide a very short explaination of each that would help me alot. And which folder are you supposed to put all your scripts and html files in? Thanks.
.fantasticodata <<fantastico installations
etc <<other stuff
mail <<other mail stuff
public_ftp <<<where FTP users info is stored
public_html <<put all of your files here
tmp <<the temporary folder..where unseen files are stored
www <<<same thing as public_html, you can put yout web files here as well...
basicly everything but public_html, and www is NOTHING you need to worry about it is basicly just for the server to worry about, if you delete one of those folders it could criticly effect your website, so just a tip...leave them there lol

Those are folders you probably don't need and are files needed for your site to run correctly. I wouldn't worry about those

public_html
www
These two folders are the exact same thing and will take you to the files available to be seen on your website. The index page to your site will be in there and it doesn't matter which one you use but whatever files you want to put on your web site for download or to be used as your actual web page will go in there.
.fantasticodata ===> used by fantastico to store its information. ie: which scripts are installed, when, etc.
etc == > a folder "above" the public_html folder -- Apache Servers have some security features which make the contents of the folders "above the public_html" folder more secure against web access, a more private folder than the pulic_html. Must be accessed from the server root direction.
mail ===> used to store Mail stuff, passwords for mail, redirects. Access to mail is web-based, so you will not have much to do with this folder from the cpanel side of things.
public_ftp ==> A folder for others to access the ftp services on your account
public_html => this is the 'web info storage place' Put all your web-site html pages here (and usually your scripts, too.)
tmp ===> a folder for temporary stuff, like images created 'on the fly', maybe some database temp files and such. This gets cleaned out by automatic scripts, so don't store anything here.
www ===> an 'alias' for the public_html folder --- can also upload web pages to here, but most use the public_html folder
And which folder are you supposed to put all your scripts and html files in? public_html
The others are pretty much all used by the cpanel and fantastico and the server scripting and it would be quite exceptional for you to have anything to do with the folders other than the public_html (or the etc folder, maybe).
Any more questions, just ask.
