Hey there everybody! I need some help.
Here's the problem. I have a Linksys Wireless WRT54G v5 router, which, I think, is acting up.
First of all, I can't get port forwarding to work! About three month ago my port forwarding was working flawlessly, I could use download clients like DC++, or BitComet, or have an ftp server running, etc... Now, whichever ports I use, nothing seems to work.

Plus, in clients like DC++ where you're connected to several hubs, the connection to the hubs is constantly dropped. On top of that, the joke's on me actually, because people can download from me, but I can't download from them! Now, that's not the end of the story, when many computers are connected at my house to the router, the internet connection is extremely slow, well I shouldn't say the internet connection, because when I connect just one computer directly to the modem everything is fine.

So, I will say that the router connection is slow. Pages load for ages, even when I try to connect to the router to administer it, it takes forever! My friend told me that it might be due to the fact that I use 128bit secure connection, so I turned that off all together, didn't help! Then I went to the extreme of upgrading the firmware version, which didn't do much either...

Anyways, to make long story short, what am I to do? I am thinking of just buying another router, was thinking of D-Link DI-784 AirPremier? Any suggestions? Anybody else experienced any problems like these?

Here are some suggestions about what you should try to do:

1. Check if your connection is using at least 256bit encoding (mine does and now no one can even think of taking my internet) - besides havent noticed any speed decrease.

2. Programs that you have listed are not "so" liked by many providers, which might cause them simply to block any ports related to them. And the fact that they still work is maybe due to other protocols that they use and not necessarily the whole thing will get blocked.

3. Check your firewall settings, in some routers there special features of protection that might greately decrease performace.

4. Check if your bandwidth quota is not limited automatically.

5. Find QoS packet and bandwidth settings through gpedit.msc and look if the reserved bandwidth is at 0

6. Try changing ips withing your lan - sometimes it happens that router get faulty built in software and it has bugs with some ranges of ips.

7. Test your LAN cards and other equipment, maybe the problem is not even in the router (happened to me once - lan card died and was lagging whole LAN)

8. Check your system for any types of spyware or viruses - they can actually affect your speed greately and take a lot of bandwidth.

9. Never use any connection speeding up software - it might make some changes you have no access to, and sometimes those programs are not campatible with some types of routers.

To add to that you can also try resetting the router...maybe you changed a setting thats causing the conflict

I tryed a lot of things but i had some lucky after all, because the router stop working last week, so i returned it to the retailer, then i sold it on e-bay, and then i bought a D-link 524 that has a lower range but is very faster and never loses connection, Any of you know if can i change the 15Db antenna for a better one?

I have similar problems. The WRT54G router (v5) from Linksys drops my broadband connection every few hours. When I use my Apple Airport Express router I have never been dropped in weeks. Clearly a weakness of the linksys router. Have upgraded firmware, with no positive result. Have no idea what the issue is.

you must check if exists any Firmware update for that router and need to check your DMZ or virtual server settings.
The problem could be related to DCHP Server as if you connect only one equipment directly it works fine.
Please check your ip settings and try to set them manually.

I haven't had any problems with my wrt54g, but i flashed to the wrt-54g firmware which is incredible. Good luck with the d-link. The one i had a few years ago crapped out on me

I was having similar download issues with a Wrt54G that had worked flawlessly for two years.

Oddly, the performance was the worst on the one website I use the most for business. The site uses a lot of ASP and isn't very well optimized.

I could access just about anything else on the planet in reasonable download times. Several different Interent Speed Tests through the router showed 10+ MB downloads and 2.5+ MB uploads. My Ping and Tracert results were all reasonable.

I identified the router as the problem after I connected to a neighbor's wireless and the problem with this one website disappeared. I checked every configuration setting on the router and even pinged the web server in question to establish a manual MTU.

The same laptop performed fine on my neighbor's router and when connected directly to the cable modem. When it was connected to the router (wired or wireless) this one site slowed to a crawl.

As a last resort proir to buying a new router I updated to the latest firmware (I was on v.5. I think the latest is 8.X). My problem with the one website seems to have been fixed and my overall performance has improved.

It's hard to say if the firmware itself fixed the problem or if updating firmware somehow does a 'hard reset' and clears something the normal power off/reset button does not.

Either way, the firmware update saved me from spending cash on a new router.
