NOT RUNESCAPE (I HATE THAT GAME)

I am addicted to World of Warcraft, and its using up all my money I don't want to pay all that money a month because I am just a student. I was wondering if there was any cheaper or free alternatives to World of Warcraft? I heard guildwars was pretty good, but I think thats around the same price?

Yes there are.

One friend of mine is playing Perfect World: http://www.perfectworld.com.my/
The game looks very much like World of Warcraft, same ideas... My friend says it even has better graphics.

And it's free.

I myself didn't play it, as I don't like getting addicted with games.
But it's your life to waste :)

Kurisu, you can play WOW-like games but nothing compares to World of Warcraft and you know that. Why don't you try playing on private servers? You won't have to pay anything to play there. You can find private servers here

http://www.xtremetop100.com/world-of-warcraft
http://www.wowstatus.net/
http://www.gtop100.com/worldofwarcraft

Each of those three websites have links to private servers as well as stats and patch requirements. Make sure your WOW client is updated to the supported patch for your desired private server because some servers are up to date with regular Blizzard servers and some are not so it is important to check what patch the server supports before trying to join.

You find a list of top private World of Warcraft servers on this website: http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-play-World-...rcraft-for-free

Yeah. It's possible to play a private server, but I don't recommend it in any way. Because WoW is so big, with the few players on private servers the places are nearly always empty. Also, there will be often problems with server. And, well, it's less fun.. you can think of those other things urself :)

Well me as one person I like the wow privateservers. There is  suchThingsas gm commands as well. A server that has things like modingLevel to 80 and to adding and spawning things. The server I currentlyPlay on is www.Echelonedwow.Net/ they have everything from flying to spawning. But just so you know the servers are illigal. I play on the trademark game as well I just wanted to see what a flying mount feels like. If blizzard fines me that is what I will say though, it is the truth.

that's not true. Some private servers have more than 5000 players. And some servers are more fun because you can make money faster and you can level up much faster than the normal WoW. For example: fun servers. I recommend going to http://www.Omg-wow.Net. It's a very fun server but it doesn't have as much players as the international servers. But, it's your choice

Florensia, very good graphics take a look into it. It has a ship system and on sea battles also the usual adventure type travel on foot. Bosses of course and entertainment of side quests. =) That mounts up quite well to a nice WoW like game eh?

Another would be DOMO (Dream of Mirrors Online), this game is probably the only of its kind. Its a celshaded MMORPG, which makes it quite attractive to the eyes. The battle system is easy enough to understand and there should be a decent amount of players on it.

Third, Ragnarok Online, Gravity officially opened a free server so you wont need to go to a private server to have your character. Of course it may have some things different for instance how much exp you lose when you die and spawn areas but generally its the same game just that it WILL take longer to level up. Trust me ;A;/

Fourth Ether Saga, the game created by Perfect World designers, really good game and have the cute characters. Pets, Missions and a decent player base you should try it!

I'm trying my best not to name any private servers but if you like to look into Lineage2 its a very good game. There is a lot of private servers around that game and the population which most people worry about is normally high in it.

Thankfully I've never played WoW till today - yeah, thankfully! But that doesn't mean I wasn't addicted by similar games. I played a game called "TIbia" for quite some time and it was actually quite fun though it's graphics are outdated. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone as I seriously doubt that it has some virus problems, but it's worth a look, and afterall, the virus could have come from another source I'm not sure.

Tibia is a very old mmorpg. It began in 1995 if I'm not wrong. It's a pity they haven't updated the graphics but maybe that's just because they wanted to keep it free. Check it out if you like:

If you do not like Runescape, or if you are looking for something that mirrors in quality to WOW for FREE, you are going to be looking for a long time. You can try out Lost Chaos and all the Aeeria games, but the replay value isn't there. I'm working on a new site just dedicated to this stuff at http://gameslikewow.com ... Check out Aion next week, the open beta is coming out, and if you like that, it's probably worth paying over WoW. Aion already has a big foreign player base. Planeshift has been around for a long time as well but never really emerged.

Runescape is pretty decent in HD but it's lacking a solid PVP model which is why their traffic will probably decline in the next few years. They are too paranoid about real world trading and it's ruining the quality of their game. Oh well. Poor management.

Let me see what i can find:

First, the most "wow" like game, Runes of Magic
http://www.runesofmagic.com/ro/index.html

It looks a lot like wow, just better graphics and well i can say the gampley isn't bad either.
1 thing that is special about this game, you get dual class system, so you can take 2 classes on 1 character, lvl both of them to 54(max lvl atm) and your main class will benefit some skills from your general class
Ex: my class was a Rogue and i had another Knight class for my secondary, so like that i had my Rogue skills + def. buff, stamina passive buff and some other skills from a knight. ^^

another game that i should add is:
http://www.talismanonline.com/
Talisman online, so it sounds lame, it looks lame, i start playing just because is lame but for some reason i enjoy it, has a big list of "special" things that some mmo don't have or at least don't look exactly like this, like the animation of the character and is a bit fun to play ^^

last game i'm gonna add is:
http://metin2.subagames.com/
metin2, well this game is pretty lame in my opinion but for an old pc or if you only want something new, you should try it ^^

If you want to pay for your game then i suggest either Lineage2 or wait for Aion Online (should come this month ;D) but if you wanna play something free then i suggest Runes of Magic, not the greatest support you can get from a staff team but it is one of the best free mmo's in my opinion.

This game is great. After I quit WoW due to monetary problems, I went to this game out of suggestion from a friend. It took me a little while to get adjusted to the controls. (They're almost the same to WoW, but some are annoying.)

What I wish is that I knew the storyline behind the game as much as I did with WarCraft.

yup Runes of Magic is a great game but it is not comparable to WOW. this game doesn't have any map comparable to wow and number of maps are limited too. but anyway its completely free and its a good game if you are tired of playing WOW. "Perfect World" is a nice alternative too however it is not comparable with wow too but it has some features which i found them making the game more interesting for playing more hours. one of them is light gravity which gives your character the ability to jump very high so you can go up the walls and explore many places. another one is how your character grows and takes it's role, this very close to wow. anyway i haven't found a real alternative for this game yet maybe its time for blizzard to make another WOW with better graphics and more features.

Why not give Lord of the Rings Online a try? Take a look at the official web site and the Wikipedia page. While I did not try it, it sure looks like the next best thing after Guild Wars - okay, and World of Warcraft, too. However, it is not completely free, it just has a recently added "free to play" option. Of course, if you do like it, you always run the risk of having to pay afterwards, so it is really your choice whether to give it a shot or not.

Or, you could just wait for Guild Wars 2 to come out and save some money until then :)

I am on a quest to check out other games as well. I have never played WOW, but I hear Allods is much like it. You can always checkout mmohut i think its called. or you can google free mmorpg's, and you will find several sites with lists and reviews. Currently I am playing Dungeons and Dragons (Ebberon or Eberron) and its pretty cool, better than lord of the rings, same company that makes it though.

Seems to be a question gamers leaving WoW tend to ask themselves immediately after leaving, fortunately there are a plethora of good alternatives to WoW, and I'll list a few here to help you decide on a good alternative.

My first suggestions would be Dungeons & Dragons Online, and Lord of the Rings Online; I choose these as the best suggestions because while many of the other F2P (free to play) MMO's were designed from the ground up as "cash shop" games, these two were first designed as subscription based and therefore tend to have a more polished and fluid experience than their counterparts. Which makes the game seem more "WoW-like" since Warcraft is arguably the most polished MMO ever.

DDO (Dungeons & Dragons Online):
DDO offers very fun and engaging combat with a complex and balanced class system. The combat is purely action based, akin to the likes of Conan online. The class and skills systems are directly derived from the pen and paper game, and prove to be very fun and potentially complex.

LOTRO (Lord of the Rings Online)
Lord of the Rings Online may in fact be the closest game to WoW out there, a fully polished game that has both exciting PvE and PvP (or PvM). Great graphics and a rich history of lore, you'll find all the exciting locations from the books and movie in this game, and for that alone its worth a romp in my opinion.

Here are some other suggestions for purely F2P mmo's that are polished enough to warrant mention:

Forsaken World:
Created by the developers of Perfect World, Forsaken world attempts to be more "western" friendly with its darker tones, the graphics are improved and the combat more fluid. A very solid entry in the F2P Market

Runes of Magic:
Without a doubt the most "WoW-like" of any F2P game... actually include P2P games also, as this game is nearly a wow clone.

4Story is pretty similar, more chinese..japanese looking but its same concept (2 Factions, 3 or 4 races for each (I think) 5 classes level cap of 90 instances partys raids PvP and more look into it if you think it would be right for you (VERY small download compared to the amssive 20+Gigs for WoW lol)

During my time reading this entire log, I've noticed one game that isn't stated, and in my opinion, Better, than world of warcraft in two ways. One, Graphics, story lines, classes. Two, You don't get killed everytime you spawn.. The game I'm talking about is Allods. (:

Here try Eden eternal by aeria games. It's multiple class so you can be any class in the game.it has a lot of players, is free and has very good graphics. It's like a cartoonish WoW. It has dungeons, guilds, territory wars and more. And when I play the game and am in a dungeon with my guild it. Kinda feals like wow because you need tanks, clerics, and dps'ers.

Sword 2 is a good one. I think it is recently new. Or Allods online which has some really sick graphics. You can try freelikegames.comtoo. They have 5 games like World of Warcraft that are apparently free to play online.

P.S. Runescape is not that bad haha

You're right, Guild Wars is good (great in fact!) - but no, it's not the same price! You just buy the game outright, and there is no monthly subscription. It means you don't get patches/updated content as frequently as you do with WoW, you only get new content whenever a new expansion comes out, but it's a great game. I love it. Prefer it to WoW, I just got bored of it because it's been quite a long time since the last expansion as they have been working on Guild Wars 2.

There isn't much point buying it right now though, unless you have the time to get the original game + all the expansions and play them all the way through within the next 6 months or so, but it would be pretty rushed if you did that! Guild Wars 2 is entering closed Beta any time now (if it hasn't already), and I don't think the game itself will be too far behind (it was originally predicted to be out this Autumn/Winter but it's taking longer than expected) - I'd stick it out with WoW a few more months til GW2 comes out and then play that :-)

Alganon is very much like WOW. Although it is not cartoony like WOW.
It is free to play up to level 30 , then a one off fee to play to max level 50 .
The player base is VERY low at the moment. All aspects of the gameplay are the same as WOW
with only 4 toons to choose from at the moment , Mystic , Warrior ,Magus and Ranger.

There is new content planned for the new year , so i hear!
The client download can be found at MYALGANON.COM .I have tried this game and found it fun !
