Linux Mint Or Opensuse?

Hello,

As of now I'm trying to reformat a friend's laptop. It's an old one. Sony VAIO, with a 512 MB of RAM, Intel Pentium 4 3 Ghz with an 80 GB of hard drive. ATI video card I think.

The user is just someone who access Facebook, Yahoo! Messenger and a bit of Skype.
Most of the time, the user plays a game called Slot Machine from Slot Plus Casino. It's
a free game that simulates a Slot Machine game with virtual betting stuff.

Now, I hate Ubuntu because of the Unity thing. I did some research. Linux Mint and OpenSUSE.
Apparently, I'm confused. Linux Mint has KDE and GNOME as well as OpenSUSE.

Which of the two (Linux Mint vs. OpenSUSE) will I install and will I use KDE or GNOME?
What's the default Desktop Environment that comes with Linux Mint and OpenSUSE?
Which is better KDE or GNOME?

The user is really used to Windows XP. I can't use Windows 7 because the DVD drive isn't working properly.
It can't read DVDs but CDs are okay. I also can't install Windows 7 via Network Installation.

I don't know how to do a Network Installation of Windows 7. I only have 2 laptops (mine) with Windows 7 installed.

Anyway I'm waiting for everyone's reply. As of now, I'm burning Windows XP into a CD-R.

Hey there,

I'm a 20 year old film student and I am planning to join a short film competition. I have a script in hand already and I would like to know your opinion on it.

It's a narrative story about a dead girl's regrets about friendship, love and family. (The twist is that she is actually dead throughout the film will be revealed at the near end of the film). I posted this script here to hear other people's opinion, suggestions and critical analysis on how to improve the film. Is the pace too fast? Is the twist too predictable? is there some scenes you guys want to add or delete? I'm open to any criticism as long as it helps improve the film.

A question that must have been running in many people’s mind that why social evils like honor killing persist in the society and especially in countries like India, where people talk about democracy and freedom of speech and expression. The most saddening fact about such offense is that it is supported by the heads of councils and communities.

Honor killing is not a new concept as it is being practiced from long period of time. But in recent time the issue has glorified more. It is the murder of usually female member by one or more fellow mostly male family members, in which the perpetrators (and potentially the wider community) believe the victim to have brought dishonor upon the family, clan, or community.

Meanwhile, there is a misconception among people that honor killings is confided to north in India including states like, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. But this is a reality check time.

The evil concept of honor killing is not only confided to north India but it is highly followed in south India as well. Although, initially a series of incidents were reported from the northern parts of India but now it has spread to south.

A recent study revealed that the reports of such grubby incidents are coming from all over the country.

This is a high time when serious steps should be taken by the government to tackle honor killings.

Chikan Embroidery

Chikan is a basic part of Indian culture since 655 AD believed to be rekindled by the wife of Mughal emperor Jahangir, Nur Jehan. It is a traditional embroidery style which took birth in city of Nawabs, Lucknow, India. The embroidery is one of the Lucknow’s most famous textile decoration styles.

The word ‘chikan’ actually means embroidery. There have been many explanations behind the evolution of the term ‘Chikankari’. Some say that the word, ‘Chikankari’ is derived from a Persian word Chakin or Chakeen while others claim that it is a bent version of Chikeen or Siquin.

The history behind the Indian Chikan work is very rich. It is said that in the 3rd century BC, a Greek traveler who was passing by a village in Lucknow stopped and requested a poor man for water. Delighted with his hospitality, the traveler taught him the art of Chikankari. But, some credits Noorjahan for introducing the art to India.

Method of Chikankari embroidery work depends on the stitches used. There are three types of unique stitches that are employed in the art.

Flat Stitches
Embossed Stitches
Jali Work

Flat stitches are elusive and delicate which lie close to the surface of the fabric. It gives a unique textural appearance while Embossed stitches which are decorated from the fabric surface providing it a distinguishing granular texture. But, the Jali work is the famous of all as it gives striking delicate net effect.

There are some basic steps involved in getting the finish product of the Indian Chikan work. The basic processes involved in the art are namely: cutting, stitching, printing, embroidery, washing and finishing.

After completing the cutting and stitching process the printing work is carried out with wooden blocks dipped in dye. The next step is to design the embroidery which is generally done by women. The last step involves the washing and finishing, which takes almost 10 to 12 days including bleaching, acid treatment, stiffening and ironing.

In recent time, the demand of the Chikankari work is increasing and has spread to cushion covers, pillow covers and so on. The market of the embroidery is flourishing, enriching not only in India but also in International market including U.S. and Europe.

Burning A Dvd With Choice Of Subtitles

I was wondering if the following is possible, or, which software needs to be used to achieve it:

I have an .avi file, and I also have two sets of subtitles (.srt format), in two different languages to go with it.

Both subtitle files are fine and run in perfect sync with the film, as i can see in VLC video player.

I would like to know now (the first one I used to know, but I forgot), which software to use to burn the film with the subtitles on it, as I know Nero does not support subtitles (not the version of Nero I use anyway), so, if anyone could remnd me of the name of the software to do that, that would be a great help.

However, here is a second thing I would very much like to do (if it is possible, of course), and that is o burn the film to a DVD, with a menu, giving you an option to choose whether you want

No subtitles.
Subtitles in one language
Subtitles in the other language.

If anyone knows of a way, or a program to achieve his, would they please let me know?

Mediawiki Error When Creating Thumbnail.

I used the auto-installer with my Logic Pro hosting to install MediaWiki.

Everything works fine except for it seems like image thumbnailing isn't working properly...

Error creating thumbnail: Unable to run external programs, passthru() is disabled.
The settings are default and everything that needs to be set to true is set to true as well as the path for converter is /usr/bin/convert (default from auto install)

I start the topic with an apology in the title, just because I seem to be forced to repeat myself.

I know I will probably get some opposition, but I feel I have to point this out, because what I want to have a nag about is repetitive too.

I am aware of the fact that a new MyCents script is in its beta stage and is being tested, however, I feel we should not be made to suffer because of this.

It is now Friday, February 3, 012.

I have, alongside others, probably, made some posts, among which there is at least one of considerable length.
which was started on Wednesday, February 1.

My MyCents counter is still the same as it was then, no update seems have to be taken place yet, and I need to be able to monitor how I am getting on to reach my amount of MyCents to pay for my hosting.

Another member here had the same problem and raised a ticket about it, being about 80 cents short, and having had a 3rd and final warning for being overdue, without even having had a second one.
According to the ticket, Xisto gave her a seven day extension so her hosting would not be suspended, and they also told her that the script was ran manually every day to avoid any issues.

Nevertheless, the issues continue to exist.
The member I am talking about owes 80 cents, and needs less than 11 cents to get to her next dollar so the debt could be paid off.
There have already been a number of posts made by her, as advised by Xisto, and in that particular ticket they assured her "by posting you should certainly be able t clear what you owe easily and on time", but nothing has happened so far.

The same goes for me too, I am doing my best to comply to the rules, but this situation makes it very difficult to have proper control over what I am doing.

So, sorry for the nagging (some people might see it like that), but I honestly wish things would get a bit more effective from now on.

Well you may find this strange but i dont know much cars or trucks the only thing i know is that there are lots and lots of different types.
Learning to drive has never interested me i think because they are to many cars and other veichles on the road and to many mad drivers on the roads.
When ever i go in a car be it a taxi or in a relations car i really dread it i dont enjoy the journey one bit i have a fear of being in an accident i am very unconfortable in cars.
You may find it stange but i dont have this fear on public transport i do use public transport a lot.
My other way of getting around is my bike i feel safe riding my bike too and now a days most places have cycle paths which i think is the best thing ever that way cyclists dont get in drivers way.
So drivers and cyclists are more happier.

People sometimes say "it is better to be a criminal, as, when you are the victim of a crime, you come off second best".

How true that sometimes proves to be.

It is with disgust that I read an article in Het Laatste Nieuws (a Flemish newspaper) about the treatment of the imprisoned child molester and murderer (serial killer) Marc Dutroux, (Probably Belgium's most hated criminal).

Before getting into the article itself, it might be good to give a little bit of background information on Dutroux and his crimes, so that people would understand why the article in question is causing quite a bit of commotion.

The man Dutroux:

Marc Dutroux (born November 6, 1956) is a Belgian serial killer and child molester, convicted of having kidnapped, tortured and sexually abused six girls during 1995 and 1996, ranging in age from 8 to 19, four of whom he murdered. He was also convicted of having killed a suspected former accomplice, Bernard Weinstein, later proved insane. He was arrested in 1996 and has been in prison ever since. His widely publicised trial took place in 2004. A number of shortcomings in the Dutroux investigation caused widespread discontent in Belgium with the country's criminal justice system, and the ensuing scandal was one of the reasons for the reorganisation of Belgium's law enforcement agencies.

In February 1986, Dutroux and Michèle Martin (the woman he married in 1989, divorced in 2003, they had 3 children together) were arrested for abducting andraping five young girls. In April 1989, he was sentenced to thirteen and a half years in prison. Martin received a sentence of five years. Showing good behaviour in prison, Dutroux was released on parole in April 1992, having served only three years. On his release the parole board received a letter from Dutroux's own mother to the prison director, in which she stressed concern that he was keeping young girls captive in his house - which was essentially ignored.
Following his release from prison, Dutroux was able to convince a psychiatrist that he was psychiatrically disabled, resulting in a government pension. He also received prescriptions of sleeping pills and sedatives, which he would later use on his victims.
Julie Lejeune and Mélissa Russo (both aged eight) were kidnapped together from Grâce-Hollogne on June 24, 1995, probably by Dutroux, and imprisoned in Dutroux's cellar. Dutroux repeatedly sexually abused the girls and produced pornographic videos.
On August 22, 1995 Dutroux kidnapped 17-year-old An Marchal and 19-year-old Eefje Lambrechts who were on a camping trip in Ostend. He was probably assisted by his accomplice Michel Lelièvre, who was paid with drugs. Since the dungeon already contained Lejeune and Russo, Dutroux chained the girls to a bed in a room of his house. His wife was aware of all these activities. Dutroux killed the two girls several weeks later by drugging them and burying them alive at one of his properties in Jumet.
In late 1995, Dutroux was arrested by police for involvement in a stolen luxury car racket. He was held in custody for three months between December 6, 1995 and March 20, 1996. During this period, Lejeune and Russo starved to death in the dungeon. There is documented reports that police searched Dutroux's house on December 13, 1995 and again six days later in relation to his car theft charge. During this time, Julie Lejeune and Mélissa Russo were still alive in the basement dungeon, but the Police failed to discover them. Since the search was unrelated to kidnapping charges, police searching the house had no dogs or specialised equipment that may have discovered the girls' presence, and they failed to notice the significance of the freshly plastered and painted wall that concealed the dungeon, in an otherwise decrepit and dirty basement. While in the basement, officers heard children's cries, which they decided had come from the street outside.
Two months after his release, Dutroux, with help from Lelièvre, kidnapped 12-year-old Sabine Dardenne who was on her way to school on May 28, 1996. She was imprisoned by him, once again, in the dungeon where he had kept his previous victims.
On August 9, 1996, the two men kidnapped 14-year-old Laetitia Delhez when she was walking home, from a public swimming pool. But an eyewitness identified part of a license platewhich matched a vehicle registered to Dutroux. He, his wife and Lelièvre were all arrested on August 13, 1996. An initial search of his houses proved inconclusive. But two days later, Dutroux and Lelièvre both made confessions. Dutroux led the police to the basement dungeon where Dardenne and Delhez were found alive on August 15, 1996. In an interview conducted several years later, Dardenne revealed that Dutroux had told her that she had been kidnapped by a gang but her parents did not want to pay the ransom and the gang was planning to kill her. Dutroux said he saved her, and that he wasn't one of gang she should fear. He let her write letters to her family, which he read but never posted.
On August 17, 1996 Dutroux led police to another of his houses in Sars-la-Buissière (Hainaut). The bodies of Julie Lejeune and Mélissa Russo as well as another accomplice Bernard Weinstein were found in the garden. An autopsy found that the two girls had died from starvation. Dutroux said he had crushed Weinstein's testicles until he gave him money, he then drugged him and buried him alive. Later Dutroux told the police where to find the bodies of An Marchal and Eefje Lambrechts. They were located on September 3, 1996 in Jumet (Hainaut), buried under a shack next to a house owned by Dutroux. Weinstein had lived in that house for three years.
Hundreds of commercial adult pornographic videos, along with a large number of home-made sex films that Dutroux had made with his wife Michelle Martin were recovered from his properties.
Investigations and trial:
A number of errors (cover-up or human error? This was never specified further) were made during the investigation:

While investigations went on against Dutroux for car theft, Julie and Mélissa were still alive in their cell, but they were never found, since that particular investigation was unrelated to kidnapping charges, police searching the house had no dogs or specialised equipment that may have discovered the girls' presence, and they failed to notice the significance of the freshly plastered and painted wall that concealed the dungeon, in an otherwise decrepit and dirty basement. While in the basement, officers heard children's cries, which they decided had come from the street outside.
Several incidents suggested that Dutroux's intentions were not properly followed-up. Dutroux had offered money to a police informer for providing girls, and told him that he was constructing a cell in his basement.
His mother also wrote a second letter to the police, claiming that he held girls captive in his houses.

It is obvious that, under these circumstances, there was widespread anger and frustration in the country, du to the slowness with which the investigations were conducted and the police errors.
When the judge in charge was dismissed, it lead to a massive protest march of 300,000 people in Brussels in October 1996, during this march, demands were also made for reforms in the police and justice system.
A Parliamentary Investigation in February 1998 concluded that Dutroux did not have accomplices in high places, but that he took advantage of corruption, sloppiness and incompetence.
In April of the same year, there was commotion again, when Dutroux was transferred to a court house without handcuffs, he overpowered a guard, took his gun and escaped, but he was caught a few hours later.
This incident caused to ministers and a chief of police to resign.

The trial began in March 2004, Dutroux admitted the abductions, but denied the killings of the girls, while he admitted having killed one of his accomplices.
On June 22, Dutroux received a sentence of life imprisonment, while his former wife got 30 years imprisonment and another accomplice got 25 years.

All the above shows we are dealing with a monster, a dangerous psychopath, who should never see the daylight again.

He demands to be served according to his every wish.

Officially, he gets preferential treatment because his health conditions warrant this, but there are certainly some bizarre contradictions to be found:

He does not want fish in bread crumbs, but croquettes are fine.
Some yoghurts are taboo, others are not, even if they are of exactly the same substances, but only different in taste.
He does not like mince, sausages or spaghetti bolognese, but he does like ham.

Poultry is his absolute favourite, he will eat that in any form or shape.
Cheese is all right, but only if it comes in slices, otherwise it can be taken back to the kitchen.

If they serve him any undesired meal, he often complains to the prison management.

Now, who does he think he is?
Did his victims get a choice of food? NO! They were left to starve to death.

What is the penal system up to?
Why treat a monster like Dutroux with kid's gloves?
Has he ever shown any mercy with any of his victims?

For all I care, he should count his blessings there is no death sentence in Belgium, which is a punishment I think he would definitely deserve.
Instead of fulfilling his every wish, they should just keep him on water and bread, which is still better than what his innocent victims got.

As i said in the opening of this post: it seems like crime does pay, it seems that nowadays the criminals come off better than their victims.

The world of medicine has certainly come a long way in just a few years. Take my recent gall bladder surgery. Instead of gutting me like a fish, they were able to make 5 small incisions, all pretty much under 1 inch long and get that troublesome body part gone.

There is one thing though that I certainly wish they could figure out a way to avoid. Pyror to surgery, they still insist on starving and dehydrating a person almost to the limits of one's endurance. I had not been able to eat the day I got sick, I did eat one slice of left over pizza, but I barffed that up in the doctors office right before my trip to the hospital, so I was really quite empty. But they wouldn't let me have a drink of water no way shape fashion or form. I begged long enough and they finally gave me some ice chips to suck on. (great with my bad cold sensitive teeth, but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick) Probably just as well, because if they wouldn't have I was ready to drink out of the sink in the hospital room anyway. I should point out, I am very big into consuming liquids. I drink at least one gallon of tea each day, and often more than that if it is a really hot summer day, plus numerous glasses of water also. So no liquid at all for a whole day really had me running on empty.

Now I know they claim you can vomit when going under anesthesia, and this is supposed to be the reason, and I do know that it does happen, I've seen it happen numerous time when having puppies fixed for hernia repairs or what have you. But why can't they come up with some way around this problem? Surely when people end up in the ER for emergency surgery they don't wait a day letting them starve before helping them.

In honesty, the stopping of my digestive track was worse than the surgery it'self. When you add to the fact that the antibiotics they gave me probably also killed off the digestive bacteria in my system, and then my severe dehydration and starvation on top of everything else, getting it going again was severe agony. Squimish people, stop reading here. After an hour and a half on the toilet 2 nights after surgery and let me tell you I thought I was going to die after all. The pain was awful. I was pretty sure my guts were going to rupture. Ended up sending the hubby out in the middle of the night to the local Walmart for an enema. I'll not get any more graffic that that, but just let it suffice to say I hope I never have to go threw that again!

I was pretty pround of my state when I heard on the news the other day that St. Louis Missouri held the first in the country celebration of our troops returning. They held a large parade, and the news media said there were a hundred thousand or so people that turned out! That's quite a large gathering. And the interesting thing, it was all started by 2 guys who used their face book pages to promote it and raise funds to have it. My hat's off to those 2 fellows for doing such a great job.

Purchased A Domain And Hosting. (Having Problems With Support Tickets)

Ok, so I joined the forum because of myCENT, but I only plan on using that as a backup for my paid hosting. Anyway, I purchased hosting about 16-20 hours ago and I was kinda wondering how long it takes for everything to get setup. I've sent 2 support tickets in the last 2-3 days and neither has been responded to yet.

The first ticket I closed myself after about 24 hours because I got some help here on the forum (which is fine with me). The 2nd ticket is regarding some sort of time line on my purchased hosting.

I understand it takes time to setup domains and hosting, but I would like to know how long this actually takes. I would of hoped after a full business day my hosting and domain would have been registered and setup, but this doesn't seem to be the case.

Minecraft Mod (Computercraft)

Hey everyone, pretty new to the site and the main reason I joined was for some better hosting for a program I made using this amazing mod for Minecraft.

ComputerCraft allows you to create a computer inside your Minecraft world and then program that computer using LUA. My person program (ComputerCraft IRC) uses HTTP get and send to allow for a virtual IRC environment that can be accessed even when your on single player minecraft. This allows for talking between multiple servers and single player as well.

Some amazing things have created using this mod, and it's really easy to install and very compatible with lots of other Minecraft mods. I hope to see you fellow minecrafters check it out and post in the thread with any problems/questions you may have.

Hey everyone, my name is Casper7526 and I'm new here. I've been looking for a reliable webhost for a while now and thought to myself that this would be a great idea. I mean posting for virtual money that you can spend on a webhost... whoever thought of that gets some big kudo's in my book.

Anyway, I'm mainly interested in webhosting for my minecraft related websites, so all you minecrafters out there, whats up!

I've tried a few random free hosting services and even though most of them "do the job", I've recently been messing with a new mod on Minecraft called "ComputerCraft" and I've developed a sort of IRC server. So basically it connects to php pages and gets the data thats returned from a mysql database to build a chat program persay.

Now the problem I run into with free servers isn't CPU memory.. because even though my scripts are run pretty frequently (each user rechecks a php page every 1-2 seconds (script takes about .1-.2 seconds to run and load) (just simple SELECT from mysql stuff). It's the fact that a lot of free web hosts limit you based on CPU time... So with a decent amount of users I hit the CPU time limits pretty frequently causing major lag issues as it waits for the next minute to pass. (My current host... bytehost allows me 40 seconds of cpu time every minute) Now that's decent until you get 10 people on the IRC server at the same time.)

So here's sorta my question, are the packages hosted with Xisto (the site I had to sign up for to get myCENTS) restricted like this? And if they are, what plans are restricted and/or by how much.

My Dreams

Why do we dream and what makes us dream i have often wondered this.
I think dreams are strange things and do they really come true like it says because if they do im still waiting for mine to come true.
I know i dream every night as i have the same dream every night and that same dream a few times a night.
The dream i have is going to the toilet in what ever the dream about and then i wake up and i need the toilet.
Weather im dreaming about a family gathering or im travelling in something in the dream i will squat down some where or i could be sitting on a toilet or in the dream and im in bed i would be wetting the bed it is all so real it is unbelieveable.
Another thing i dream about often is loved ones i have lost.
The dreams ive had of loved ones ive lost can sometimes be things we have done in the past like when i dream about my mum and dad the dream will be about where we used to go drinking or where we used to go on holidays these dreams are so surreal.
I also have lots of dreams about my mum in law and my father in law the dreams i have with my mum in law in make me very happy unfortunately i only had my mum in law in my life for seven months and she was the best mum in law in the world.And when my mum in law is in my dreams i hear her talking to me as though it is real.
One of my latest dream was involving our puppy Marley.
Marley is a golden labrador and around his nose and mouth he has a black circle i dreamt that the black circle went down his back in a black stripe just like stripe in the gremlins film this dream wierd i know.
What i would find interesting is to find out what some dreams mean as i think their must mean something or find out the reason we have some dreams.

Creating A Facebook Page Tab From An External Page (Through A Php File)

Things to note down :-

App Id (Step 2)
Page Tab Name (Step 3)
Page Tab URL (Step 3)

STEP 1:- ADDING THE APPLICATION

Go to the link https://developers.facebook.com/apps and click on “create a new application.”

Add a valid name for your application (No symbols or spaces). For now ignore the Namespace field and proceed to “I agree to the Facebook Platform Policies”, click to continue

Step 2:- ADDING BASIC INFO ABOUT YOUR APP

Give a NameSpace to your PageTab application in “App Namespace” tab. Namespace is simply the url friendly version of your app display name. App Domain is the website your data will be fetched from. Note: - The domain/website you add here must have SSL installed on it (https://)
Also make sure to note down your APP ID, this will come handy later on.

Step 3:- INTEGRATING THE APP WITH FACEBOOK

Website
“Site URL” is where you enter the url of your website.
Page Tab
“Page Tab Name” lets you decide the output you wish to display on the index of your page tab
“Page Tab URL” is the file that is used as the final display/output. This page contains html code that you wish to show on your facebook page. If adding an html page does not work, then try renaming your html file as .php and do not forget to enter the “/” at the end of the url.
“Secure Page Tab URL” and “Page Tab Edit URL” will have the same url/website as “Page Tab URL”.

Step 4:- ADVANCED SETTINGS

On the same page, you will find the “advanced settings”. Here we move to the canvas settings and set the “Canvas Width” to “Fluid”. Save changes.

Step 5:- SETTING IT UP TO SHOW ON YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE
Now go to the facebook page copy paste the below url

Remember APP ID from Step 2? Well YOUR_APP_ID = APP ID and YOUR_URL is the url/website you added in “Page Tab URL” from Step 3.

On selecting a page and clicking on “Add Page Tab” button your PageTab will be set on your facebook page.

Step 6:- Making the App your default page or default landing page. (Every time a new visitor comes to your page, he will see the PageTab first.)
For setting this newly created page tab as a default landing page.

Click on “Get Started” on the left top side of your page.
Now click on the “Edit Page”.
Here click on “Manage Permissions” on the left top side.
In this section click on the dropdown list of “Default Landing Tab” and select the name which you had provided in “Page Tab Name” of Step 3.
Finally click on “Save Changes” in the bottom.

Voila! Now every new visitor is shown your Page Tab. Once they like the page, they will be shown the updates, posts and so on.
