Help Me Build My Stereo System

I want to build a badass system but I really don't know how, I already picked out my speakers, below I will show you what I had in mind.

These will go on the outside
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SSF-5000-Floor-Standing-Speaker/dp/B000OG4E1G/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&
These will go on the inside of the above ones
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-B3000-Bookshelf-Speakers-Woofer/dp/B000OG6I6A/ref=dp_cp_ob_e_title_1

These will go on the inside of the above ones
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-B1000-8-Inch-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B000OG88KY/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_c

And these will go in the center
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-CN5000-Center-Channel-Speaker/dp/B000OGA81Q/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_b

Am I choosing the best speakers? I wanted to put them all side by side, is that a good idea or will it make them all sound like crap?

secondly, if I buy all these speakers, what would be the best thing to power them? I'd like an amp with a built in CD player if possible.

Thanks, please reply cause I really wanna make this happen

What's Your Favorite...?

I just got a idea for a new forum game, based on the thread "I love it when..". This one could help us know secret things about each other

It's a game where people share their favorite..(something). It goes like this -

The Rules

First, I'll start off by saying a line "What's your favorite ice cream?" or something like that. The next person, it could be anyone, has to post the answer to the question, and at the BOTTOM, a another question. So, it looks like this -

Quote

My favorite ice cream is vanilla strawberry with chocolate sprinkles. Blah blah blah.

What's your favorite thing to do on a bus trip?

The question could be answered by anyone, you can't ask one person to answer it.

OK, lets start.

What's your favorite song to sing in the shower?

Your Cms Of Choice?

So, following the recent PHP vs. ASP topic (where there has also been some talk on Ruby on Rails and Python) I've decided to also make another one, where you declare your favourite Content Management System.

Now, since I've posted a few already in the previously mentioned topic, I'll list them here again as mahesh2k suggested:

1. Wordpress is probably my favourite CMS, easy-to-install, easy-to-use and has a large community behind it. It also has extensive documentation ( http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page ) which will be of much help when you decide to use it for your CMS of choice (believe me, you will choose it after a while)

2. Site Managr CMS (that's a Web 2.0 name ) - Looks like the old Wordpress, seems to have interesting features (Events, more extensive Analytics), built entirely on CodeIgniter. The Demo page ( http://designelemental.net/test/sitemanagr/index.php/admin ) is not working, unfortunately.

3. MediaCore Video / Podcasting CMS will be interesting to all you podcasters out there, free and "fresh out of the oven." It has features to pull data from { insert_service_name_here } to your blog, and an extensive documentation (reminds of Wordpress a bit).

4. Stacey App File CMS doesn't use databases for pulling content to the user but literal files and, therefore, cannot enable commenting on your blog. It's not a problem, though, because you can easily make the commenting system using a service like Disqus. Built on PHP.

5. I don't know, just seemed right to have five list items. Perhaps Cushy CMS, which doesn't have to be installed on your server but just uses classes to edit particular HTML elements. Not suitable for a blog. Free to use.

So, there you have it - five CMS examples, but I'm sure (or I hope ) you can suggest even more. What's your favourite?

Update, 6 hours later:

Of course, how did I forget...

6. Joomla, also an Open-source CMS, probably one of the more complicated ones to use (at least in my experience, it is). Their website seems a bit cluttered, but overall it's still an OK product.

7. Drupal, community plumbing. Free, but I have never used it so cannot speak for its quality. Anyone have comments?

8. ExpressionEngine, only its "core" version is free for personal projects (I believe), otherwise offers some cool stuff but in my opinion is not better than Wordpress. Some of the big names in Web/Print/Graphic design use it, though, like Jason Santa Maria and Veerle Piters.

9. Speaking of big-name designers, Elliot Jay Stocks uses a hosted solution for his blog nowadays (it used to be powered by Wordpress), called "Harmony App". He's already said a few words about it on his blog ( http://elliotjaystocks.com/blog/perfect-harmony/ ), but it's important to note how it now seems as if the CMS came out of beta testing. I personally don't see the future in already hosted blog solutions, but would be really happy if Elliot and Harmony App proved me wrong.

Update #2, est. 1 hour after previous update

And, of course, we also have...

10. Magento is cool if you intend to sell stuff on your website (that is, eCommerce). I'm not a big fan of their site (barely found pricing and all the first time there), but I think there's no better way of selling stuff on line than Magento. If you're a "skilled individual" (I think they've put it like that) you can download and manage the free version, but otherwise you're going to have to pay a subscription fee in order to receive all support. If you'd like to learn about programming for Magento, I suggest you check out a tutorial series by NetTuts where they teach you just that ( http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/other/getting-started-with-magento-ecommerce/ ).

Update #3, est. 3 hours after previous update

A coincidence perhaps, but this is yet another new CMS I've found in the recent few days:

11. Refinery CMS is a Ruby on Rails-based CMS and a fairly fresh one for that matter. Seems to be very nice and I intend to further see how it works as I learn more about Ruby.

Registering Microsoft Office

Dear people I hope can help me.

Hope you are well.

I bought A HP Mini 110 Laptop in Buenos Aires maybe around 8 months ago.
Anyway, I didn-t register my Microsoft Office Programmes and I have now used my 50 offline Word documents...

My problem is that my laptop wont let me register. When it asks for the key, it says its incorrect. I take it that the registration number is the sticker on the base of the laptop entitled Product Key? ...The laptop is legit by the way. Can you help me out on this and also is there another way that I can try to input it, do you have instructions. Microsoft are looking for 72 euro to email them about it....NO CHANCE!!

Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible
Best regards,

Golf Ball Ignites California Fire

Quote

You can use a golf club for all kinds of non-golfy purposes -- walking stick, fishing rod, club, to name three. And now we can add to that list -- firestarter.
Over the weekend, a golfer's routine swing in the rough at the Shady Canyon Golf Course in Irvine, Calif., struck a rock. Not so different from the way you play, right? Only this time, the impact caused a spark, and the spark set off a blaze that eventually covered 25 acres, according to the Steven Buck, General Manager of Shady Canyon Golf Course, and required the efforts of 150 Orange County firefighters, writes the Associated Press.
Wow. And I felt bad the time I shanked a ball through the window of a house too close to the fairway. That was nothing compared to this!
The golfer's name is being withheld, which is probably for the best, and no charges are going to be filed. Fortunately, it all could have been much worse. As it was, the blaze required both helicopters and on-the-ground crews.
The conditions were ripe for a blaze, with dry brush from a recent heat wave just waiting for the right spark. Like, say, one caused by metal on rock.

Thats some weird news for this week Who knew golf could be so dangerous? Now, its time to take your new knowledge to your club or any place which you hate and want to destory... perfect opportunity. If you are lucky, you won't get sued too!

Help With Css Sytelsheet

Just wanted to ask for some help with my site regarding CSS Stylesheet. If you go to my site and see that there is a menu list on the left hand side. I wanted to create another box under that one the same width. The contents of my CSS Stylesheet is below, anyone know how to do this? As I have tried but am unable to do so.

I also previously got help to set up that current menu so it is embedded using a particular code that links to another file so I only have to change that particular file in order to change the menu thus not having to change every page on the site when I want to change the menu. It would be great if I could set this up the same. But for now I just need to know how to do it.

I thought I would post this here as the help I have had previously with this forum was great and I appreciate everyone's help, thanks.

How "unforgiving" Should Game Difficulty Be?

Should a game be extremely difficult and unforgiving, or relaxing and not challenging? I imagine this is a much debated subject for gamers and game designers and I'm not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, there is no doubt that an unforgiving game with few save points makes the game more intense and enjoyable. A fun test of intelligence even. In difficult shooters (such as the old Rainbow Six games, SWAT 4, or Full Spectrum Warrior) I take my time and check my corners and treat my character or team like real people, who's lives are fragile. Fun experience. In strategy games, it makes a game much more interesting if there are consequences to actions. I have to contemplate whether to attack or not. Attacking too early could be a fatal mistake that I should consider carefully.

While the lack of saving does make a game more intense and exciting, that is only when things are going well. I don't know about anyone else, but I am not flawless in my gaming skill. Suffering a stupid, meaningless death seconds from a checkpoint or an accidental death to a game bug (ever throw a grenade to have it bounce off your cover and into your face instead of over? What kind of moron would throw a grenade like that?) or a wrong mouse click. and having to redo 15-20 minutes of a level over and over begins to get extremely frustrating and becomes a complete waste of time. I often find myself so angry I could throw my computer / controller out the window and just keep playing it over and over trying to succeed so I won't be ticked off anymore.

When I play strategy games, like Civilization, it is so much more enjoyable to play realistically, accepting the consequences of a not so successful war, or to live with an unexpected enemy attack. However, I find it nearly impossible to live with a set back after an hour or more of planning, my cities being razed or my army being wiped out, when I can just load up a save and change the situation with God-like powers. Thus, I end up playing a completely boring and easy game because the option to "Cheat" is so easy.

So I really can't decide. Is it better to have a game that's very challenging and unforgiving, or a game that is so easy you could play in your sleep? Sure, getting stressed because of a game sucks, but isn't a game that's too easy kind of boring?

I'm kind of pleased at the switching trend from manual/quick saves to checkpoints. They seem to work pretty well in most cases, and it relieves me from the task of obsessive saving around every turn. Sometimes it kind of sucks not being able to manually save before a part you have trouble with, but I guess nothing is perfect...

Call Of Duty Black Ops

Hello everyone. I don't know if you've seen any of the gameplay on the newest Call of Duty game coming out November 9th, but its looking to be a pretty nasty game. One thing that's been my favorite out of anything in the CoD Series would have to be Call of Duty WaW's Nazi Zombies. I mean whats more fun then mowing down hordes and hordes of zombies. Upgrading guns and so forth. Well Black Ops is bringing Zombies back up to the plate. I for one can't wait to see what they have new to offer. WaW had huge death lightning wolves. So who knows what going to be happening.
Anyone up for new Kill Streaks? There are some confirmed as of now. RC Car Bomb. Yea RC... You drive the little remote control car around find some people on the ground and blow them up. I think its only 2-3 kills to get this so I hope it doesn't get to spammy. Also there's a kind of Predator Missle type thing it sounds like it will be just like it but named differently.
So yea the new CoD is starting to look like its worth the money. November 9th (Going to the midnight launch ) anyone else getting it? Either way I'd buy this game just for the Zombies!

Originality And Influence

On the back cover of the 1994 Norton anthology Postmodern American Poetry, a commentary claims that the collection is the first to “fully represent the movements of American avant-garde poetry.” Beginning with a poem by Charles Olson from 1953, the anthology contains 411 poems by 103 different poets, from the Beats, the New York School and the Projectivists to a general “array of poetry written since 1975.” The selection ranges from John Cage, Charles Bukowski and Jack Kerouac to Denise Levertov, Robert Creeley and Amiri Baraka to Jerome Rothenberg, Susan Howe, Bruce Andrews and Lyn Hejinian. The last entries are from 1992; thus the volume covers a time span of just short of forty years, the forty years between the two Baha’i Holy Years of 1953 and 1992. For the purposes of this prose-poem contemporary poetry is taken as the period of the poetry found in this anthology 1953 to 1992 and beyond during the years of my poetic output: 1992 to 2010.

I took an interest in Ruediger Heinze’s review of this Norton anthology in his: ‘The Dream of the Unified Field’: Originality, Influence, the Idea of a National Literature and Contemporary American Poetry,’ in the European Journal of American Studies, Volume 2, 2008. My interest was aroused since it was in the same year 1992, an auspicious juncture in the history of the Faith I had been associated with for nearly 40 years, that I began to take the writing of poetry seriously after 40 years of playing around its literary edges in a host of different ways.1

In the western tradition of poetry the poet who stands out, who is successful, who gains a reputation that lasts, must be a strong-willed individual whose creative genius allows him or her to write with and against an overwhelming tradition, altering it and thus leaving the imprint of their originality on the genealogy of great literature. Who knows whether my poetry, my writing, would come to stand out? Indeed, the very aspiration toward such a distinctiveness, such a distinction, seems somewhat pretentious.

One defining characteristic of poetry across the spectrum of over 200 nations in our planetized world, is its diversity, its inability to be pigeonholed or represented by one or two or many more major figures and models. There is no binding consensus on what is essential in poetry right now. There may never be in the millennia to come. Who knows? This superabundant complexity may seem maddening to those whose business it is to impose rational categorization upon disorder – namely critics and theorists – but to poets like myself this situation feels like an entirely welcome and delightful state of affairs.2-Ron Price with thanks to 1Universal House of Justice, Ridvan Message, 1992 and 2Ruediger Heinze’s review of the 1994 Norton anthology Postmodern American Poetry: ‘The Dream of the Unified Field’: Originality, Influence, the Idea of a National Literature and Contemporary American Poetry,’ in the European Journal of American Studies, Volume 2, 2008.

No single style here in this poetry of 40
years….but some ongoing resistance to
any mainstream ideology:1 my work can
find its home here in the extension of a
collection of poetry than began with the
inception on Earth of God’s Kingdom!!2

I tap into many international, historical,
national, local, religious, psychological,
sociological & popular culture voices--
defining my utterance within what may
seem like a jangle of many influences!!3

A generation of poets has been raised in
incestuous creative writing programs at
universities where students are taught the
mechanics of writing poetry and they try
to avoid taking risks—an imperative for
getting that passing grade, the assessment.
And so creativity, finding one’s individual
voice and making one’s words new is not
found.4 I have found mine and I share the
voice in cyberspace in nanoseconds across
a space measured in trillions of megabytes.

1 Paul Hoover, ed. Postmodern American Poetry: A Norton Anthology, W. W. Norton & Company, NY, 1994, p.xxvi.
2 From a Baha’i perspective the Kingdom of God on Earth can be seen to begin in 1953 with the completion of the mother temple in Chicago.
3 “No poet since Whitman has tapped into so many distinctly American voices and, at the same time, so preserved his utterance against the jangle of influences,” Susan M. Schultz Schultz, ed., The Tribe of John: Ashbery and Contemporary Poetry, University of Alabama Press, Tuscaloosa, 1995, p.1.
4 Ezra Pound(1885-1972), a major figure of the early Modernist movement in poetry, emphasized that poets in their work should “make it new.”

Hi there,
I have been a paypal client many years and its the only payment gateway I use online as I feel it is the best.
My mother and farther both have paypal I have my own personal one and a business one though they seem to think they are all mine.

I have also just found out I am unable to unsuspended the account though tommorrow I will be on the phone to them and come down on them like a ton of bricks!

Anything happened to your pay-pal account recently?

Ok I Have A Neat Math Thing For Ya...

Ok here it goes:
Take any 5 consecutive numbers and write them down vertically on a sheet of paper.
i.e.:
1
2
3
4
5

Now going down the line, square these guys and write the answer to the left:
1*1=1
2*2=4
3*3=9
4*4=16
5*5= 25

Now, going down the line again, take the smaller total and subtract it from the total below it, and write it between the 2 to the right, like so:
1
>3
4
>5
9
>7
16
>9
25

And do it one more time with those answers: and you will always come up with the answer 2.

I am not sure why this happens, but here is the next cool part (Don't ask me why I thought of this in the shower, I have no idea why)

Take another set of numbers, they have to be consecutive and cube them and do the same process, the answer will always come out as 6. (You may have to increase the number of consecutive numbers, in order to subtract all the way out to the common answer)

Ready for the next cool part, want the answer to if you did those consecutive number to the power of 4? The answer will always be 24. Want to know how I know that? All you have to do, is take the subtraction answer of set 1 and multiply it times the power of the next set.
So like this:

Set 1, the set you multiplied by a power of 2, it's answer is 2
Set 2, the set you multiplied by a power of 3, it's answer is 6 (2*3)
Set 3, the set you multiplied by a power of 4, it's answer is 24 (6*4)
Set 4, the set you would multiply times a power of 5, it's answer will be 120 (24*5)

And then after doing a bunch of those, and subtracting all those answer out, somewhere down the line it all comes back to 1,2,3,4,5,6,...etc.

Weird huh?

Explain that one for me. Or if you need me to, I'll do it on paper and scan it in, if it's confusing to you guys and gals.

All My Ideas Get Invented?

Well, this is a really strange thing that has been happening to me ever since I can remember. I usually have these GREAT ideas that just pop into my heads at random times and I tell my family, friends or anyone that is just around in the moment. I'm pretty sure this happens to almost everyone... but what happens next is the weird part.

So, I have these ideas and then a few months.. or even a few years later -- its INVENTED! Some crazy scientists in Geneva or some other place have the same thing that I thought of! It's so crazy! I remember the time that I thought of Wireless energy and I had a WHOLE FREAKING plan about how everything is connected and that there are huge "power" stations that emit energy and suck in energy too. Cars pick up those signals, so no more gas! (I'll explain more about this later in a thread in the Theory section). This was waaaaay back when I was in 2rd or 3rd grade and then sometime in 2009 i learn that its now possible and heck, they have companies based on it now. Gooood Luck Ryan Tseng, because I'm coming after you!

I have a few more ideas like this that have been invented! Did this happen to anybody else? Or do many of 6 billion people have the same ideas? Or are the Russians spying on me?

I am planning on opening a business soon, but dont have the name for the company yet. Do you have ANY ideas?
My Company's business is very education oriented, i already have a name but i intend on changing it, it was Kid Squad, but since my business targets the youth ages from 8 til 18 years old, the ones aged 17 or 18 will feel offended if they where categorized under "Kid". Now the company is designed to support the healthy social and emotional development of the youth, through developing their positive behavioral skills that will lead to success in school, family, and community.

It is composed of 3 departments, 1 ) Moral Development 2 ) Education/Tutoring 3) Essential Skills Practicum. We treat all kinds of learning disabilities, for example, ADHD, Dyslexia etc. And it is the region's ( Middle East) first company that certifies the youth in essential skills.

XHTML is a refined version of HTML and follows the guidelines of XML but is an ordinary web page. JavaScript and PHP allow users to access XML documents. I've recently learned the basics behind XSD (formatting/nesting rules for a specific XML document) and gather that this is the same equivalent of DTD and/or XMNLS.

However, I am still at a loss how you can use JavaScript/PHP to pull in data from an XHTML document. I imagine you still use the same XML parsers you would use for an XML (RSS) file, but beyond that, I haven't a clue, but I know it is possible because I have seen it in action.

light a 2 pin bi-color LED and charge 3 capacitors (maybe 7 soon). On the LED, in one setup, it is green, when voltage is reversed, it is red. Point is, electricity can flow through it 2 ways. Due to this, everything is connected in parallel. I have a resistor connected in series to the ground pin, and a diode is connected in series to the Vcc supply. The LED can withstand the parallel ports' power and current.

Here's my question. If I remove the diode, when electricity returns to the port, will it destroy the port?

[Rsps] Misthalin

Hello!
I'm coder and owner of RSPS(RuneScape Private Server) called Misthalin.
I've been flamed a lot for leaving original RuneScape storyline and building something custom, almost a new game.

I'm currently working on: "Fairy System", "Rebirth" and converting 594-604 model header to 317.

28th of July
Today I wrote ending for a new quest called "Rebirth". I'm going to write around 20% of the quest here for you to judge/rate/hate.

Quote

"After doing various tasks and going back your god-parent he/she will after short discussion teleport you to the ritual site, where rebith will take place. At the ritual site, you parent will talk to you about how the ritual works and what happens after it, then she/he will ask if you agree. You agree and he/she tells you to get on the burning pyre. She/he will say farewells and lit the pyre, you will shout in pain as your body burns, soon you will "die" and your spirit will extract from your burning body. Soon you will start getting sucked into earth by mysterious power, screen goes black and you will find yourself in a dungeon. You'll have to find exit/fight your path to exit. After finding exit, you will be teleported back to ritual site, you'll see your new body waiting there close to your god parent. You will "walk" into the body and claim control of it, your ex-god parent will say a few words and teleport you to your home town. You'll find some equipment/rewards in your inventory, and see that your skill levels were reseted back to one.(this is because body contains your battle skills, duh!) Your experience rate will be doubled in the process, AND you will be able to choose your NEW god parent.(all gods have diffrent bonuses)"

I'm also adding a base for pet fairies today. I'll post pictures as I process.

Pyramid Brainstorming

Hello!

My name is Rick Mitchell and today I'm going to tell you about this theory. This theory is supposed to proof; that human didn't create Egyptian pyramids.

Khufu Pyramid

Made of 2,300,000 building blocks.

On average, each block weights over 3,000 Kilograms(kg).

From what we know, it was built for about 23-26 years.

From writings we know that they used scaffolds made of sand.

The pyramid is geometrically around 96% perfect.

16000-20000 workers working during Nile floods.

Most of building blocks came from as far as 150 kilometres(km).

As seen above, we can find one point of interest on row four and another on row five on the list. If they used tempoarily scaffolds made of sand, the sand would've tightened up so much it would've became as hard as rock because of dragging all that weight over them and nearly impossible to remove. Pyramids are also geometrically 95-97% perfect. That'd be achievement even with modern technology.

What else? Let me teach you some mathematics.

2,300,000[blocks] / (26[Years] * 200[Working days per year]) = 442.307... = 442 [Blocks per day]

As you see above, they would have had to transfer about 442 blocks per day to get it built in 26 years.

442[Blocks per day] * 3,000[Weight in kilograms] = 1,326,000 [Kilograms transferred per day]

Where I live, trucks are limited to 16,000 kilograms weight... Even if their boats could've actually have carried 16,000 kilograms, their speed would've been something between 15 and 30 kilometres per hour. The blocks were brought from 150 kilometres far...

With what I've given you, you should be able to tell that human beings did NOT create pyramids. This is only theory, but theres another billion things that support my findings.

The Problem Of Evil

I have been a theist, and debated theism with many people over the decades, including some very knowledge and intelligent people.
One issue that is never addressed to my satisfaction is the basic problem of evil.
Simply put - why would any benign God allow bad things to happen to good people?

It is a very straightforward question, yet theologians wrap themselves up in semantic knots trying to answer it - and always either fudge or fail.

A common answer - that humans have free-will and evil goes with the territory - is a fudge. It is perfectly possible for free-will to exist without natural disasters that kill children, infants and other obviously 'innocent' people. Catholics would say that the infant is not innocent because of original sin, but that doesn't explain why they would be killed by God...

Epicurus (philosopher_) summed up the problem nicely:

Quote

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing?
Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God?

hi trappers,
i have a real problem with my browsers i guess, therefor i post this topic in here. but i don't know what it is? i hope you could help me in here.

i noticed recently, about a week ago or more that i can't see all new posts and topics, i usually use "view new contents", but now i either see some of the posts or see nothing at all, i keep on getting this message "Sorry, no new content found.".

and two days ago, i noticed that i can't see voting in Sotw. even when there are voting but i still see null voting.

i tried switch browsers, clearing cache and restarting browsers but nothing changed. i know it is a problem in my browsers ( i use opera and firefox). because i checked, everyone else could see new posts and the voting. and i could see them if i entered the forums as a guest!!!

so maybe it is a problem in java script in my browsers, or something i really don't know . it is so annoying, because these days i have to check others posts from entering their profiles.

i really hope someone could give me a solution or anything could help. thank you in advance.

I hope I am putting this in the right section... But I am looking for some feedback on my wife's new site. I know it needs more content but we are working on a ton of graphics and should have them up by Sunday.
Please read below:

My wife and I decided to build a website for myspace and facebook graphics. Currently it's very small and we are adding content daily. She does her graphics and I post the pages & handle the coding. I am far from a webmaster so the process is slow. I know enough html to be dangerous and don't know much java, php, perl or anything else really. I still have some format work to do as far as far as centering the page & cleaning up some of the code. I'm in the process of building a tweaks page with glitter crap and layout snatchers, but the code is a bear. We are also working on graphics for the new Myspace Beta Profile. Posting graphics in beta is a bit different than it used to be, and to my knowledge, we are the first site to offer content for the new Beta environment. We currently have only one beta graphic posted but we are working on a bunch and should have them posted soon. (next few days I think)
Anyhow, check it out & give some feedback.

NOTE TO ADMIN or MODS: If you want me to host a backlink banner for this forum, let me know, because I am also building an affiliate page for all the forums and resource sites I visit on a regular basis. (by the way, no fees for backlinks or banners just trying to help the sites who help me.)

I Need Some Really Simple...desktop Software

Hey there. I'm looking for an RSS reader...yes, I do know about Google Reader, and I'll take that if I have to. However, I'm curious if I can find a decent desktop / system tray program that will flash up news from various sources. At the moment, using my Facebook wall with Digsby seems to be my best best shot, but I don't want to constantly see all those feeds when I log into Facebook.

Keep in mind this is for an XP on my work PC...no Google Gadgets or Yahoo! Widgets to slow down the computer please. I'd just like to find a nice service similar but separate to Facebook / Google Reader that allows me to see them as they pop up. Filter words and the ability to see individual feeds as well as the entire set would be a plus. If it doesn't exist, guess I'll just have to create the program myself (not really, 'cause I don't have the time).

Thanks!

Review Art By J Frances - Layout Updated

After 3 years and new domain later I updated one of my first freelanced websites www.artbyjfrances.net. The reason I went with this template, GASP!, is that it uses HTML5 code, second, it opens up the website in terms of whitespace and organization and simplicity itself. Cause of that openness of the layout I was able to increase the size of the thumbnails from 140x140 to 200x200 and with that I did a combination JQuery/slimbox with the images which I definately like.

Two things I already know that need to be fixed is the banner and the flash slider, any recommendations on a better flash slider then this shareware would greatly appriciated.

Google Webfonts Help

So, here I am -- thinking about using a Google Webfont on a Website -- when it occurs to me that perhaps some people will already have it installed on their systems! The brave Javascript-lover I am, I decided to use a JS-based solution to test if a user has that font installed on their system and -- accordingly -- install the font from Google webservers or not.

But then it occurs to me how stupid I am; Google probably already covered that area! Well, I've decided to check that in their documents (documentation) and couldn't really find any word about that. So I ask you, dear colleagues, does Google try to see if the user has, say, Droid serif, installed on their PC?

I suppose so, but there's around 50 kilobytes in question here so I'm not going to play the guessing game...

Google Voice

I always try to write a topic while I'm still learning about it, because we all know that once you understand how something works from the inside out, it becomes all the more difficult to explain it very simply and basically to a novice. So as an experienced novice (how do you like that?), let me begin.

Google Voice is NOT, repeat, NOT the same as Google Talk (their IM service). However, they are making headway to combine them together closer and closer every day. Yet I've still left you asking, what is Google Voice?

Consider owning a master phone. One that you can take with you everywhere and use anywhere. Whether you're at work, home, or on the go, it can ring all places simultaneously. Call using your custom phone number (you get to choose it) and from almost any accessible phone. Check your voicemail at any location, and not only via phone, but also online. And if that isn't enough to sway you, how about it "automagically" transcribing those voicemails (or complete calls for that matter) to text and have it sent to your cell as a text, and/or your email (not including that it's still accessible anytime online).

Need to make a long distance number? As long as you are within the US (and I believe Canada too), long distance is free. It will notify you if it is not. For international calls, you can stock you can stock your phone up with some cash and make incredibly cheap calls worldwide! Synced with your Google Contacts, you can choose who you want to ring what phone, pick a personalized greeting for that group, and choose whether you want to answer it immediately or thrown to voicemail right off. Light sleeper and tired of your phone ringing at the most inconvenient time? Tell Google to only allow each set phone an individual on or off schedule.

Just today Gmail is now offering the ability to call straight from their page...I'm hoping this is transferring to Google Talk so that you can make phone calls straight from your PC! In November of 2009, they acquired Gizmo, which integrates Google Voice technologies into a desktop application, but after buying them out, Google shutdown the sign-up process. This is where my hopes lie.

As always, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I happened to run across Google Voice when I was searching for a free PC to Phone service to access my company's no-so-close free conference service's phone number so that I wouldn't have to pay long distance on the landline and not eat up minutes on my cell for a business that really is within my area code.... That was my intent.

However, after getting Google Voice setup and configured the way I wanted it to work, I began experimenting around. Eventually I called the conference number to access the system where I should be able to punch in the conference ID and join my party. However, it could not connect. After slaving to figure it out, and then more time trying to post in the Google support forum that said I had exceeded the 8012 character limit (when I clearly was less than 1000), I checked around again.

Google apparently denies access to specific numbers if they are more costly to access than the typical home phone. Why on earth conference call numbers are that way (amongst others, I'm sure), I'm no phone technician or accountant to explain why, but they are. So Google...from the bottom of their red, yellow, green and blue hearts...removed that number. So now I'm left in the same predicament as before.

Nevertheless, Google Voice seems like a great service to at least explore. Unfortunately, I found out the sad news today that Google Wave, one of my previous topics, was recently shutdown to any new developments, though they do say they plan to implement the system into other apps and open the code to developers. So hopefully Voice does not choke under pressure. But, that's the way they operate at Google (spend several billion dollars to come up with 10 new ideas and see if one or two of them will catch on to the general public).

Online Browser Game Questions

Hiya!

Well ive designed a strategy browser game (on paper ), ive allways wanted to make this game the idea has been in my head for like 10 years or maybe more, so nows the time to make it come to life. Ive looked all over the web and not found anything helpfull so here ive got some questions:

¿where to start?, im guesing the obviuus, im gonna need to learn html and css for webpage layout, but what else would i need to learn to be able to make a web page like this.

¿How long will it take to make? i know its not a 2 or 3 day job just wondering if 1 person was working on something this big 8 hours a day are we talking 6 months? a year? or is this project too big for one person.

¿Does a web page like that need a lot of resources? ¿Would i need a special type of host? ¿or do i just need a normal web page with extenden BW?

Well thats it for now if anyone can answer any of them questions or has got an opion about this topic it will be apreciated
