Road Accident Prevention Ideas

everyday, when you read the newspapers or watch television, you get to know of road accidents which result to physical injuries, destruction of properties, or worst, loss of lives. different factors contribute to road accidents, but most prominent of all is due to drunk driving and dozing off behind the wheel. just recently, a former senator and his wife plus two other companions in our country (PH) figured in one such road accident, which tragically resulted to the death of the wife, and serious injuries to two others (the senator and the driver) and minor scratches and bruises to another passenger when the vehicle they were in was swept headon by another rushing vehicle in an intersection. then another road accident also happened when a vehicle rushed onwards to a line of people in a funeral procession. several were killed, and others ended up in the hospital.

tragic scenes i must say, and to see precious life even just on TV/newspaper get extinguished or maimed because of something which could be prevented (especially of a driver who should not be driving drunk, or otherwise dozing off while driving), led me to think of reasons why there are no such STANDARD PREVENTION methods in cars/vehicles so such road mishaps should not end up in the news in the first place.

let's say for drunk driving, i'm thinking a breathalyzer could be incorporated into vehicles to detect a driver's capacity to drive. this thing could analyze alcohol content in the driver before the vehicle can even be started. if alcohol level of driver is above legal limit, the car would refuse to run, and no amount of hardwiring or rigging of the ignition would make it run also. and to avoid driver switching, a fingerprint analysis via the steering wheel can also be useful here. if the car recognizes a driver switch after the initial phase of breathalyzer test, then the car will slow down and stop, and re-testing of new driver starts.

for dozing off behind the wheel, there could be a system which can be invented to detect this, and in the event when driver is detected to start to doze off into sleep, an electrical jolt can be used to stimulate the driver to resume wakefulness when driving.

with such innovations as part of a standard for all vehicles, there could be less road accidents which end tragically in the unnecessary loss of lives. what do you guys think? any other ideas?

I start the topic with an apology in the title, just because I seem to be forced to repeat myself.

I know I will probably get some opposition, but I feel I have to point this out, because what I want to have a nag about is repetitive too.

I am aware of the fact that a new MyCents script is in its beta stage and is being tested, however, I feel we should not be made to suffer because of this.

It is now Friday, February 3, 012.

I have, alongside others, probably, made some posts, among which there is at least one of considerable length.
which was started on Wednesday, February 1.

My MyCents counter is still the same as it was then, no update seems have to be taken place yet, and I need to be able to monitor how I am getting on to reach my amount of MyCents to pay for my hosting.

Another member here had the same problem and raised a ticket about it, being about 80 cents short, and having had a 3rd and final warning for being overdue, without even having had a second one.
According to the ticket, Xisto gave her a seven day extension so her hosting would not be suspended, and they also told her that the script was ran manually every day to avoid any issues.

Nevertheless, the issues continue to exist.
The member I am talking about owes 80 cents, and needs less than 11 cents to get to her next dollar so the debt could be paid off.
There have already been a number of posts made by her, as advised by Xisto, and in that particular ticket they assured her "by posting you should certainly be able t clear what you owe easily and on time", but nothing has happened so far.

The same goes for me too, I am doing my best to comply to the rules, but this situation makes it very difficult to have proper control over what I am doing.

So, sorry for the nagging (some people might see it like that), but I honestly wish things would get a bit more effective from now on.

Hello, everyone! I've visited these forums a couple of times before, but didn't join until now. I tend to lurk around in forums more than I post, but I'll try to be active.

Here's a little bit about me:
I am currently a senior in high school, aiming to become an animator in the future. I'm rather behind on the curve compared to other aspiring animators considering I have never used an animation program such as Flash (for 2D) or Maya (3D) before. The closest I've been to making any type of animation was drawing in the corners of my notebooks and making GIF images.
I'm mostly interested in working on 2D animated television series in the future, but since 3D is the future, I'll be learning both.

I like listening to various kinds music, especially rock music, but I'm sort of disconnected from the world, so when my friends mention songs or artists they like, I don't know any of them. xD On the other hand, when I talk to them about bands or artists I like, they have no idea who I'm talking about. So I have no friends to talk about music to. My favorite music genres are: Post-hardcore, Adult Alternative Pop/Rock, Punk Rock, Pop Punk, J-Rock/Pop, Hard Rock, and Country. I listen to other genres too, but I don't typically look them up. I have a hard time listening to most Rap and Hip Hop, but I'll admit some are good. It's just hard to find ones that I like, so I don't really bother since I'm not a big fan of the genre anyways. For some reason, I can't listen to K-Pop. It doesn't work for me. About three quarters of my friends love K-Pop, but I can't listen to any of those songs for more than a minute. It's not that they're bad (well, some of them are), I just can't listen to them.
^Somehow that became a mini-rant. I'm sorry.

In my spare time, I like to watch cartoons. Mostly children's cartoons and anime. Yes. I am an anime fan. I also like reading manga. Once in a while, I read novels. I mostly read fantasy novels, but I find sci-fi and war-related novels interesting as well. My favorite hobby would have to be drawing. I love drawing, sketching, and doodling, but compared to other artists, my art is very mediocre. I'm working on improving my art skills; currently, I'm learning different styles and practicing drawing objects, scenes, and realistic people and animals. I play video games sometimes, but I do not consider myself a gamer. My gaming motto (despite not being a gamer) is "Always win; even if lose." I know, that's horrible grammar, but I don't care.

Well, I think I talked way more about myself than I originally planned to. If you actually read all that, thank you. I hope it didn't waste too much of your time.

I was pretty pround of my state when I heard on the news the other day that St. Louis Missouri held the first in the country celebration of our troops returning. They held a large parade, and the news media said there were a hundred thousand or so people that turned out! That's quite a large gathering. And the interesting thing, it was all started by 2 guys who used their face book pages to promote it and raise funds to have it. My hat's off to those 2 fellows for doing such a great job.

Linux Mint Or Opensuse?

Hello,

As of now I'm trying to reformat a friend's laptop. It's an old one. Sony VAIO, with a 512 MB of RAM, Intel Pentium 4 3 Ghz with an 80 GB of hard drive. ATI video card I think.

The user is just someone who access Facebook, Yahoo! Messenger and a bit of Skype.
Most of the time, the user plays a game called Slot Machine from Slot Plus Casino. It's
a free game that simulates a Slot Machine game with virtual betting stuff.

Now, I hate Ubuntu because of the Unity thing. I did some research. Linux Mint and OpenSUSE.
Apparently, I'm confused. Linux Mint has KDE and GNOME as well as OpenSUSE.

Which of the two (Linux Mint vs. OpenSUSE) will I install and will I use KDE or GNOME?
What's the default Desktop Environment that comes with Linux Mint and OpenSUSE?
Which is better KDE or GNOME?

The user is really used to Windows XP. I can't use Windows 7 because the DVD drive isn't working properly.
It can't read DVDs but CDs are okay. I also can't install Windows 7 via Network Installation.

I don't know how to do a Network Installation of Windows 7. I only have 2 laptops (mine) with Windows 7 installed.

Anyway I'm waiting for everyone's reply. As of now, I'm burning Windows XP into a CD-R.

Hey there,

I'm a 20 year old film student and I am planning to join a short film competition. I have a script in hand already and I would like to know your opinion on it.

It's a narrative story about a dead girl's regrets about friendship, love and family. (The twist is that she is actually dead throughout the film will be revealed at the near end of the film). I posted this script here to hear other people's opinion, suggestions and critical analysis on how to improve the film. Is the pace too fast? Is the twist too predictable? is there some scenes you guys want to add or delete? I'm open to any criticism as long as it helps improve the film.

Honor Killing

A question that must have been running in many people’s mind that why social evils like honor killing persist in the society and especially in countries like India, where people talk about democracy and freedom of speech and expression. The most saddening fact about such offense is that it is supported by the heads of councils and communities.

Honor killing is not a new concept as it is being practiced from long period of time. But in recent time the issue has glorified more. It is the murder of usually female member by one or more fellow mostly male family members, in which the perpetrators (and potentially the wider community) believe the victim to have brought dishonor upon the family, clan, or community.

Meanwhile, there is a misconception among people that honor killings is confided to north in India including states like, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. But this is a reality check time.

The evil concept of honor killing is not only confided to north India but it is highly followed in south India as well. Although, initially a series of incidents were reported from the northern parts of India but now it has spread to south.

A recent study revealed that the reports of such grubby incidents are coming from all over the country.

This is a high time when serious steps should be taken by the government to tackle honor killings.

Chikan Embroidery

Chikan is a basic part of Indian culture since 655 AD believed to be rekindled by the wife of Mughal emperor Jahangir, Nur Jehan. It is a traditional embroidery style which took birth in city of Nawabs, Lucknow, India. The embroidery is one of the Lucknow’s most famous textile decoration styles.

The word ‘chikan’ actually means embroidery. There have been many explanations behind the evolution of the term ‘Chikankari’. Some say that the word, ‘Chikankari’ is derived from a Persian word Chakin or Chakeen while others claim that it is a bent version of Chikeen or Siquin.

The history behind the Indian Chikan work is very rich. It is said that in the 3rd century BC, a Greek traveler who was passing by a village in Lucknow stopped and requested a poor man for water. Delighted with his hospitality, the traveler taught him the art of Chikankari. But, some credits Noorjahan for introducing the art to India.

Method of Chikankari embroidery work depends on the stitches used. There are three types of unique stitches that are employed in the art.

Flat Stitches
Embossed Stitches
Jali Work

Flat stitches are elusive and delicate which lie close to the surface of the fabric. It gives a unique textural appearance while Embossed stitches which are decorated from the fabric surface providing it a distinguishing granular texture. But, the Jali work is the famous of all as it gives striking delicate net effect.

There are some basic steps involved in getting the finish product of the Indian Chikan work. The basic processes involved in the art are namely: cutting, stitching, printing, embroidery, washing and finishing.

After completing the cutting and stitching process the printing work is carried out with wooden blocks dipped in dye. The next step is to design the embroidery which is generally done by women. The last step involves the washing and finishing, which takes almost 10 to 12 days including bleaching, acid treatment, stiffening and ironing.

In recent time, the demand of the Chikankari work is increasing and has spread to cushion covers, pillow covers and so on. The market of the embroidery is flourishing, enriching not only in India but also in International market including U.S. and Europe.

Well you may find this strange but i dont know much cars or trucks the only thing i know is that there are lots and lots of different types.
Learning to drive has never interested me i think because they are to many cars and other veichles on the road and to many mad drivers on the roads.
When ever i go in a car be it a taxi or in a relations car i really dread it i dont enjoy the journey one bit i have a fear of being in an accident i am very unconfortable in cars.
You may find it stange but i dont have this fear on public transport i do use public transport a lot.
My other way of getting around is my bike i feel safe riding my bike too and now a days most places have cycle paths which i think is the best thing ever that way cyclists dont get in drivers way.
So drivers and cyclists are more happier.

Another Winter Warmer

It is still winter and the worst might yet be to come.

Apart from the storms last week, everything has been quite smooth here in the UK, but it would not be the first year we get snow and ice late in the winter.

In that case, you need to get some decent food inside you which helps you face the elements if you have to be outside.

So, here it goes, not only a winter warmer, but also a yummy yummy dish called "Corned beef Hash".

Ingredients:

To serve 4 persons.

1.5 kilo (3.3 pounds) of potatoes.
2 big onions
500 grammes of beef (steak) mince.
1 can of Corned Beef.
25 grammes (0.90 ounces) of butter.
1.5 liter (52.5 fl. oz.) of water.
2 OXO cubes

Method:

Peel the potatoes and cut them into four.
Cut the onions into pieces (does not have to be finely chopped).

Melt the butter and fry the onions until nice and brown.
Add the potatoes, Corned Beef and mince and crumble the OXO cubes in.
(Instead of OXO, you can also use beef stock paste).

Add the water and bring to the boil.
Let it simmer on a very low fire for about 2 hours.

If so desired, you can also add gravy granules or add a jug of REAL coffee (no instant mix) to make the whole dish even more nice and brown.

Do not be put off by the idea of making a jug of coffee and adding it, it gives it a nice brown colour and you do not taste the coffee at all.

Serve with bread (if required, can also be eaten by itself) and feel yourself break out in a sweat.

Burning A Dvd With Choice Of Subtitles

I was wondering if the following is possible, or, which software needs to be used to achieve it:

I have an .avi file, and I also have two sets of subtitles (.srt format), in two different languages to go with it.

Both subtitle files are fine and run in perfect sync with the film, as i can see in VLC video player.

I would like to know now (the first one I used to know, but I forgot), which software to use to burn the film with the subtitles on it, as I know Nero does not support subtitles (not the version of Nero I use anyway), so, if anyone could remnd me of the name of the software to do that, that would be a great help.

However, here is a second thing I would very much like to do (if it is possible, of course), and that is o burn the film to a DVD, with a menu, giving you an option to choose whether you want

No subtitles.
Subtitles in one language
Subtitles in the other language.

If anyone knows of a way, or a program to achieve his, would they please let me know?

Every animal owner/lover has had at least a dozen funny experiences with their animals.. I have them all the time with my own little babies but there are some truly hilarious moments during my time at the vet's clinic.. So why don't you post some of your funny experiences?

Dogs usually know when they are going to get a jab so we resort to many tactics to prevent our patient stressing over his routine injections and not to ruin the relationship you develop with the animal. One time, this particularly loving Labrador by the name of Thomas decided to flee upon seeing the needle in the doctor's hands.. Usually when Thomas or another patient comes by, I distract them, in the case of dogs by calling their name, blowing in their nose or letting them slobber over me while holding their neck collar the entire time...

Darling Thomas this time managed to look at the needle from the corner of his eye and bolted out the door with my hand stuck in the neck belt.. And for the sake of convenience I usually go where my hand goes.. So I got dragged from the main O.T a good 6 feet into the lobby before I managed to wedge a leg in a couch and the other into a computer table..My chest helped stop the force known as Thomas when I slammed into part of the couch. Though I admit I could have let go of the belt, there were patients outside and Thomas was not from our part of town so it was risky to let him run out on his own.

Another time during mango season, after buying a few dozen mangoes I decided for some reason to feed an oncoming cow a few mangoes from my bag... She was a smart cow :S because she realized the bag was the answer to her problems **shakes head**.. Never before have I seen a cow run so fast, I was really making a run for it with her catching up to me And this was on a busy street, I think what freaked me out was the fact that we were facing each other during the feed and as I started walking towards home, she turned out really fast and started chasing me...

If she laughs at the things you say, even it isn't that funny, and if she pays full attention to you when you talk to her. I think letting a girl know you like her is always a good thing, because most of the time we can sense it anyway, even if we're not sure about it. If she likes you back, she'll tell you, but if not, she won't think you're weird for telling her. She'll be flattered that someone likes her. So, flirt and if she responds well, tell her.

Please remember this freinds, all girls are different, some are the shy type, some are the more active type as in acting a bit more forward, a girl that is just naturally a shy type will express her like for you by trying to ignore u, hardly speeks to u but u will notice her stare(give u glances) and u may notice her try to look away quickly so that u dont catch her , u may even catch her smile at u at times, it will seem very obvious by the way she tries to avoid u. You'll just notice. Nokia N900 review

I've got this great device from Nokia almost a year ago. I'll try to present my experience with it throughout the year.

I didn't look into smart phones despite all the buzz around them, especially iPhone and Android craze that swept our country (and it still continues). That is until my old trusty Nokia 6610i battery started to show its age.

I've started to hunt around for information about various phones and trying to decide what I need from such a device.

I've looked at friends Motorola Milestone and decided that I really want a proper hardware keyboard. Typing on it compared to touchscreen was awesome. Next was PDF reading capability. Going to work with public transportation wastes more than an hour a day. Device screen resolution played important factor. By looking at various specs, 800 x 480 seemed like an optimal resolution for this kind of device. GPS was included in all options and that's a good plus.

So why Nokia N900 won my internal contest ?

Hardware wise it included:

large internal 32GB storage with optional 16GB microSDHC card, I could carry everything I need with me, including music, movies, documents;
large screen with 800x480 resolution;
slide out qwerty hardware keyboard;
FM transmitter for those rides with tape/radio system in a car;
internal GPS device;
it even could be used to make calls

Software wise it was an interesting find - a hidden gem for me. I, as a long time Linux user, was pleasantly surprised, that there is an operating system called Maemo. It is a full Linux stack which includes Linux kernel, X Windows, GTK, QT at its core (unlike Android, which doesn't have a lot of things in common with typical Linux userland). And most importantly, the system is totally open - no need to �root� or �unlock� it if you want to install or modify something. It is quite common to hear stories about successful iOS and Android device �rooting�. Maemo is a familiar environment for Linux user. Last, but not least - Maemo5 is feature packed and in some areas is ahead even today compared to other mobile OS.

Useful software included:

proper browser based on Mozilla Firefox, which renders websites the same way your desktop PC does;
flash plugin is included, no need to have �special YouTube app�, although that one is available if you need it;
awesome Skype, gtalk integration with one contact list together with all avatars and additional information about friends pulled from various online services you use;
working video chat, voip through Skype and Gtalk, everything is beautifully integrated - you talk with friends from Skype just like with other GSM contacts, there is no difference;
integrated Ovi Maps, although with limitations - routing needs active data connection, but it is enough if you just want to see where you are and where to go;
python - you can easily create missing bits or other custom/useful programs just as you do on your desktop/laptop PC
large selection of software in community maemo.org repositories;
fully multitasking.

Unfortunately Maemo OS that is made by Nokia is dead. It was mostly known when I bought N900, but all the features, possibilities to customize it the way I want and open source community support made me buy it anyway. And I don't regret it.

Maemo has simple interface that has three screen levels:

Desktop with widgets and launchers or active application.
Launched application selector with full app preview (remember that Maemo is fully multitasking OS).
Home screen with installed applications.

In first few months I've played with various screen widgets, but later found that some of them were waking CPU too often and decreased battery life. Right now I have only icon launchers for most used programs, birthday widget and 2G/3G data usage monitor. With little bit PDF reading, few browsing sessions and some GSM calls it can live without power source 3 or 4 days. With heavier online usage and music listening I need to charge it every or every second day. Sadly no difference to other smart phones.

Maemo Media player is nice application and with additional codecs it can play all media files you throw at it and additionally it supports H.264 hardware assisted decoding, audio file information scrobbling to Last.fm service. But because audio files are sorted by albums and if you have some custom compilations and other broken ID3 tags, it becomes inconvenient to listen to music. It was one of the first applications that I wanted to replace. Sadly most replacement programs work in the same album style or they do not support scrobbling to Last.fm. But have no fear, Rockbox is here! There is a native Rockbox port for N900. It has its flaws - touchscreen accuracy is bad, so you need to use keyboard for navigation, but at least it allows you to play audio files by directories and supports scrobbling.

Another disappointment was PDF reader. Don't get me wrong, it works, but doesn't have features I consider vital for such an application - it doesn't remember zoom level and page number when I open PDF second time. Community has done it again and created a port of Linux desktop PDF reader Evince. Although it has some glitches when scrolling in-page by using touch screen, but again it works OK while using keyboard. On top of that, Evince is faster.

There exists numerous of free GPS software - Marble Touch, Modrana, Mappero, GPS Logger, but commercial application Sygic Mobile Maps 10 seems to be the only sane solution for turn by turn car navigation. It works offline, has quite good maps, thought out interface, awesome voice features. N900 lacks magnetometer, therefore sometimes it is hard to judge final destination on some complex locations where GPS standard accuracy is too low.

The camera on N900 is nothing to get excited about, although it packs 5MP Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and has LED backlight, photos taken inside or on lower light look kinda blue. I didn't expect anything from smartphone camera, sometimes it is handy, but it doesn't replace old Canon PowerShot A530 which has same number of MP (5MP camera).

There are few games for Maemo platform. This does not only include Angry Birds, but 3D platformer Kroll, usual suspects as Chess, Mahjong, Solitaire, Snake and open source Tux games, Frozen Bubble, Doom, Quake and full range of emulators (NES, Spectrum, Amiga, Gameboy, etc). Most emulator games are not really touchscreen friendly and N900 keyboard is not made to play games comfortably, so they are mostly used to show off. Although you can connect PS3 joypad with Bluetooth and play games this way connected to TV through TV output..

If you're eager to try more touch based games, some Palm Pre games work. You just need to foul them by running predefined script and launch those games with that. Many users report success and there is even dedicated wiki pages on http://maemo.org/. I haven't tried it myself though.

All in all, N900 is great mini computer with phone features. It has dedicated community that updates abandoned Nokia open source components by creating OS updates, others made working Android port, Meego port and even Ubuntu. Yes, you can boot into any OS you desire by using boot menu. Crazy, but true.

Which smartphone app is the best for GPS navigation (driving only)? You may want to consider whether the software is free, whether data connection is required on the road, whether a lot of disk space is required to save the maps, how accurate the maps are, and so on.

Navfree is completely free, but the open street maps it uses are not detailed enough to always take you to the right place.

Google Map Navigation requires data connection. However, you can avoid or minimize using data connection on the road if you pre-download pieces of maps (20x20 square miles each) prior to your trip using WIFI.

AndNav2 and Mapquest required data connection to me while Sygic is a paid service.

On 2nd of December 2011, Nokia has launched its new free music service in Inda, named as "Nokia Music Unlimited", will supported in nokia phones three new models X2-02, Asha 200 and Asha 300. Company officials said that by this new music service the users will able to doanload and share free music from Nokia Music Store.

This Service has collection of legal tracks of bollywood and hollywood music of different singers and artists. Nokia partnered with Indian Music Industry, Hungama that includes different production houses like Yash Raj, Tseries and SIMCA(South Indian Music Companies), and many more.

Can we reset the id auto increment in the mysql database using by phpMyadmin?
let's say the shoutbox. the id #number table.. somehow i deleted some rows.. and i wanted to re-order/reset the id number acendingly in order rather than skip out..

Mediawiki Error When Creating Thumbnail.

I used the auto-installer with my Logic Pro hosting to install MediaWiki.

Everything works fine except for it seems like image thumbnailing isn't working properly...

Error creating thumbnail: Unable to run external programs, passthru() is disabled.
The settings are default and everything that needs to be set to true is set to true as well as the path for converter is /usr/bin/convert (default from auto install)
