I agree with SweetLou-- try out a livecd (Knoppix is nice) and see if it suits you. My home servers all run Debian right now, I might try Gentoo sometime. My main computer, though, has XP on it because of compatibility (my wireless card isn't supported in Linux), support, and my family would get mad when trying to use my computer if they were lost. I'm thinking of using Mepis or similar some time when I don't have wireless internet on this computer.

linux is more for experienced users, it's not easy to use, install software is a little bit difficult... but it's safer though....
while windows... every body knows how to use it.... as a good learning curve... and so on...
i prefer xp....

Hey, you can also try the Ubuntu live n installation cds (the live cds will let you try linux without installing anything.)
i am currently using windows only for games and a program or two i could get to work with wine (windows emulator).....
if you want to have just a desktop machine, try mandrake. its easy to install n maintain. good also for entry level users....
good luck

I'm using Windows XP and SuSE 9.2 Linux
Dual booting because games dont run on linux... there is a program called cedega that claims to run them on linux...
Linux rules dudes, and if you havent tried it, its time to. Its a real OS...
Come on game companies, get with it and produce games for linux and i will be happy... that way i will leave xp to burn

He is asking what to use,not wad u all are running.Linux is a little more powerful and has a GUI,X Windows. It's not exactly safe, but because most virus attacks are targeted at Windows,Linux is seen as safe. There are not much programs for linux....But on the plus side, you can run something like Windows for free!Use Centos with it's built in X Windows system...But u wouldn't be able to run most windows programs

If you are totally new to both, i'll suggest you bite the bullet and go with
linux. It's very hard to go from windows to linux later. I have tried for
years now, to make the switch, but I always become unstuck with the
fact that you cant get true root access in linux but if you have never
gotten used to i, you won't need it.

windows is the most unstable, most unsave, most hacked, most virus reported OS! HOW IN THE WORLD DO PEOPLE USE IT!, yes i have it, but i use linux as much as i can, and mandrake linux is very easy, combind with KDE, even someone that never used a computer in his/her life can adapt to KDE just as easalie as windows, and for you people that use windows for biz. lol don't come crying to the linux community when ur computers get hacked
, also if u don't wan't linux, Go with Macintosh!, they do have a 10 year run over microsoft! the Mac OS X is beautiful!
advice-just try not to use windows to often

Linux is hard because you alredy know windows.
If you are new to both OS', it doesn't really matter, they are equally hard.
But if you start with linux, you have a pretty good chance of becoming happy and content with it.

linux is not much popular yet but it is slowly being,
linux awareness and support is increasing drasticlly,
the major advantage of linux is its 99% virus free, though there are a few viruses reported in linux but they are ingelgible if compared with windows,
many windows can be run on linux
some companies have already developed such programs like win4lin etc.
and more and more games are also being made for linux.
so why not learn it, go for it
its OS of 21st centuary
i have 3 windows and 5 linux distributations installed on my PC
win 98/2000/XP and redhat9/ fedora2/3 / suse9.1/9.2
