spending time with friends and socialising

IMHO a geek is someone whose computer life influences his normal life. He begins to say OMG instead of oh my god or noob when someone makes a mistake in actual real time. However for most people I bet a geek is anyone who dwells in images, web pages, and programing.

Most geeks I know spend as much time socializing as everyone else, they just act different.

It depends. For people that arenīt too much into computers, I suppose everyone that has some kind a passion related with that (a website, posting at forums, graphic design, playing games, chatting...) looks like a geek. But if you are one of this persons you donīt have to consider yourself a geek, because there would be almost more geeks than "ordinary" people.

I suppose that if computers are your only hobby and you cannot have a conversation without talking about them... well, then youīll probably are a geek.

lmao... nice topic.

Geek: A person who's studious and focuses on gathering and knowing correct facts/information for the sole purpose of being omniscient. It is usually done for self-satisfaction. However, one does not shy away from the world. Interaction with the world is one of ways to gather information. Yet, lacks the social grace to infiltrate as the norm people.

Nerd: A geek without a clue of this world and social behavior.

HAHHA these are my definitions and I'm sticking to it! Geeks are not only confined to computer stuff but also in other fields. You can notice them right away when you say an incorrect fact, they are eager to correct you or say the correct fact. Their social manner is something to be questioned since they lack the ability to understand that there is something called, "personal space" when talking. They may look as normal as others (no white tape around the thick black glasses, or greasy hair with zits) but their ideal world revolves around intellectual challenges rather than the beauty that is skin deep. Sure you may find them easily in Star Trek conventions and Microsoft Meet and Greet, but you can also find them tuning up the red hot sports car with the latest exhaust pipe with tricked out interior that turns into mobile living room.

dadaaaa I'm a geek. I tell people I'm a geek but most of the time they don't believe me.. I mean at school. When we get into a conversation about geeks etc.. I'm like I'm a geek and they just tell me to shut up or something. My friends I hang with say we're geeks thought

I'm a hyprocrite right..sorry to say, and I hate labelling but I do it subconsiously.. and I just call people geeks...just to sortof like describe someone, lol.

To me and my friends geeks are just people that aren't popular. haha. You get geeky geeks and pretty geeks. (my mates) I'm the ugliest one in the 'group'.

Btw.. to the posts above.. geeks who love computers are called COMPUTER geeks. lol. There's lots of different types.. starting to sound like a breed.uh oh.
There's band geeks.
Computer geeks.
Clever geeks.
Fit geeks.
Popular geeks.
Ugly geeks.
Game geeks.

I'm a geek with a lot of confidence(on the outside) speaks too much and loves socialising AND computers AND I'm not clever AND I'm really ugly AND i'm different AND I can mingle with the so called 'popular' people AND I can hold a conversation without talking about computers AND other geeks mostly hate me AND I do go out BUT I do stay at home on the computer too.

Basically everyone in the world is a geek.. if there were requirements to be one.
There is no definition of geek.. it's just geek.

A geek... A geek is someone who has little or no friends, probably have stupid childish problems, like asma, or needs glasses. Someone who knows alot about useless things, and joins boring after school clubs. And a geek is someone who you copy answers from.

@hellraiser -- I take quite offence from those remark. I find myself to be a geek, yet I have quite a few friends. I go to the mall a lot. Hm, I dohave asthma, but I try not to show it, I don't bring my inhaler to school and take a puff during class. I do wear glasses but they suit my look otherthen without them.

Stupid childish problems? Usually if you're a computer geek you don't' have "stupid childish problems", because you're smart enough to know how to handle them, and if you can't, you're not a geek.

Someone who you copy answers from, that's wrong aswell, I don't let people copy my answers, and if they do they'll end up with quite a few wrong problems on there math work.

I've never joined a "boring after school club". After school I go out with my friends, park, mall, her house, whatever, and don't get home till around 6PM.

I will admint I know a lot of usless things, but I don't really share them with people. I only share my knowledge with people if I must.

Watch what you say next time or you could be looking at a ban.

lol Geeks.

I dislike labeling people.

Quote

A geek is a person who is fascinated, perhaps obsessively, by obscure or very specific areas of knowledge and imagination. Geek may not always have the same meaning as the term nerd (see nerd for a discussion of the disputed relation between the terms).

The definition of geek has changed considerably over time.

i considere myself as a geek. When i come from school first thing i do is turn the computer on, becouse if my computer is off... its like the part of me is dead. Then i go to see is there something to eat, yep there is something to eat but i dont like it. I like to eat fast food, then my computer loaded fully and i sit on it ... :P im fealing some unknown power :P hehe
I sit all day at my computer, until the morning... then i go to sleep, i usualy cant sleep a long time after i go to bed. When i woke up its 5minutes to school starting, i need to dress my self and go to school... nah i dont feal like running to school, ill walk slow, and get late affcourse and another atention point. In school first two classes i hate everyone and everything, then other classes i just hate everyone, evertything i can stand but people.... grrrr
After second class we go to eat... yeeey FastFood, i eat and for the next 10 minuts i usualy go and smoke some weed behind the school :P
Third class is then ok, but the reast sux becouse i get stoned as hell
Then go back home and do everything again. As you see im not very social dude, i listen to all kinds of metal, people say that im wierd and freak... who gives a phuck what people sad. I dont have girlfriend becouse if i do she must be from *person* sapiens... i hate them especialy :P
I think that i have a lot of problems in my life, im too depressed every single day ( you see why is that ) im too lazy to do anything, have the worst marks.
I hope there are more kind of "people" like me.
btw Geeks usualy hate windows....
TUX rulez :)

I think a geek is someone that talks weird, always snorts when they laugh LOL, wears shorts all the way up to their belly button. Someone that is always 2 hours early for school

According to me,
A geek is a person who forgets taking food, bath, date, love, home and everything else in life but will keep the details of the hardwares and softwares old and latest in finger tips.

May be not able to solve real life problems, but will solve any problem that arises in computer.

May live without food but cannot live without Computers.

I found something the other day that the International(/planetary If you're in to that sort of thing) Geek Alliance should adopt as the enterance test:

Laugh at this image and you are officially a Geek

P.S. yes I laughed at it.

A geek is some one who just is like around electronics and stuff like that a lot. I myself am a computer geek. I admit it. But in Diablo 2 and games like that, it can be a bad thing to be really good. It most likely means you sit ur a** down at the comp and just sit and play games all day and all night. It means you don't have a life. So it can be a good thing to be a noob. But not a big noob who doesn't know what anything is and how anything works. It can be a good and bad thing to be a geek.

A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest.

There seem to be a lot of definitions for the word... the one I like most is this one, from Wikipedia. It implies that geeks work at very knowledgable in the subjects that they choose to learn about, and explains the existence of so many types of geeks, like band geeks and computer geeks. It also makes sense because, according to this definition, geeks can ignore social pressures and/or physical needs (i.e. sleep or food, to an extent) while pursuing this devotion of theirs.

By the way, I consider myself a geek too, in more than one category.

You know you're a nerd/geek when your friends are talking about girls or make dumb stupid jokes. you bring up news about technology that you have read somewhere over the internet =P.. And girls ask you to take a look at their computer so you could fix it for them... When someone have a technical problem... they come to you for help and blame you when your phone/computer/etc *BLEEP*ed up because you did something to it =P You threaten people for not letting them copying your homework ....

My God lots of definitons for Geek. I didnt expect that there would be lot of definitions for Geek and Geekdom. All these definitions made me a Geek, now I can explain anyone who a geek really is.

But pals keep your definitions flowwing in. This help us widen the knowledge what geeks can really do and who they really are.

I'd say I'm a bit of a geek because I go on the computer whenever I can, and I'm not scared to show people the real me (i.e. the freaky me!) But then again, I'm not like a hardcore geek that codes programmes and stuff like that. I'm not clever enough

I don't know why people call us (the "Average" computer user) (ok i guess spending atleast 6 hours a day ++ is...) nerds / geeks - When their lying up my face! I KNOW FOR CERTAIN that they all sit on the pc hours after hours, but the fact that they go out partying every weekend and are real "PARTY GEEKS" (lol is that new?) they can call me whatever they want?

I don't LIKE that! It's LAME! It's "Noob", whatever you people say.

Now i study media and communications (Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver / HTML, Film editing, photography, you name it) and i'll be on the damn pc like all day. THAT'S not geek - But sitting on the pc cause' ya got nothin' better to do? THAT IS ?

lol Geek / Nerd / '1337s' confuse me , and is an often misused term.
I'm as "GEEK" as everyone else around here, and i'm PROUD OF IT ;P
