Interesting thread, I have been boxing for 4 years now (not really self defence) and have been taking Ju-Jitsu for about 9-10 months. I think some moves in Ju-Jitsu can / are effective if you where to get into a real situation, i actually have used a move in a semi situation before anything escalated. To back it up though i go to the gym 3 times a week and i do my boxing and ju jitsu 3 times a week (opposite days) and have Sunday to rest.

As others have said, the best defence for the street would be a self defence course or having a 9mm

defend yourself... well the only way to do it is to learn to fight. there is no such thing as self defense techniques, because you have to be able to fight to use them, so you are fighting to win not defending your self...... that said, technique and skill will out do strenght. if strenght was the key then the guys from the strongman comps would be world heavywieght champs! ;-) very few guys have any fighting skills other than a few tricks that they have used with sucess, so if you learn any fighting stlye, and then move up to freesparing, you are ahead of the game. but the ones who will attack you are ready to do what it takes, and will be brutle, so you have to be the same if you want to win....so learn to fight, katas and forms or step sparring are not going to get you there. they have uses, but you have to be able to do the moves full speed and control them, with out thinking ...ok he is setting up a kick, i will-BAMM!!! you have just been nailed while thinking of the block or counter. boxers have a lot better 'ring ' knowlege than most fighters, so studing some of that will help you a lot, but there is no silver bullet, no style that defeats all styles, so be open to what others have. try a system, any system, and if your teacher knows his stuff, hang in for a while, like at least one year and see where it takes you, it wont be wasted time even if it is not the one you stick with.

Lol, a lego crossbow. That thing would probably de-assemble itself before you can use it to defend yourself. I also agree that the only advantage martial arts or lifting weigts would give you is if you get into a physical fight, a friend who studies martial arts once told me that you do not fight people like in the movies if they have a gun. If they have a gun you do what you are told and if you ever have a chance at taking the gun away from that person you better not miss.

Martial Arts.. of course.. you feel way more secure and stronger.. plus you ARE more secure and strnger.. If you practice a good (good types of martial arts are hard to learn, hard training, and other stuff)..

Self Defense is just.. dumb

Weight lifting just gets you looks, you can't fight.

I myself practice Tae Kwon Do and i'm black belt. I like to train all the time i can.. It will get you bumped up and you will feel your muscles and the power whe nyou hit someone..

Martial Arts of course the important life skill which everyone has to learn...In order to protect ourselves from the attackers not just a fight is enough,we need to know all the self defense techniques that could keep us safe all the time and knocks down the opponent....so I feel martial arts is a compulsory part in life for the protection of oneself...All that one needs to do is build the upcoming generation strong and secure and gain life skills.
