Here's my theory, dont blow me out of the water too soon. Sony has grown to be gaming GIANT. I'm sure we all remember when Sony started out with its humble PlayStation, or PSX. Sony was still good when the PS2 came out. Here's a fact for you though. Month for Month, the PS2 continues to outsell the Xbox 360. Even the great fanfare set forth for the Xbox 360, could not beat the PS2 in monthly sales. Sony has total control over the market. And you might be saying, "Yeah, but, Sony still makes good games and a good console to play them on." Well think about this, yes it maybe good but now Sony is feeling INVINCIBLE. They no longer care what there rabid fanbase thinks they only care about the money, yes the money, so original isn't it. And now with the expected price tag of the PS3 set so high, Sony has alienated the Middle-Class market from its fanbase for at least one year and a half. Now, I may be no marketing specialist but, isn't that: A. The majority of U.S. citizens, and B. The very same Middle-Class market that welcomed Sony's PSX? Tell me if I'm wrong, but that just isn't right.
Play station or PS brand is a series of video game consoles developed by Sony Computer Entertainment. The various extensions attached like PSX,PS2 or PS3 are steps of advancement in the series. Source- wikipedia

I completly agree with you. The price is just a gross scheme to make a ton of cash by using their overwhelming market. Its really just meant to slide down slowly causeing people to wait to play because their father doesnt own a texas oil rig. $1K for a gaming console? For $1K you could pimp your comp up past a PS3. Seriously, I dont think the thing costs them over 170$ to make. I think their going to lose a ton of business to Nintendo. As I expected everyone whos voted voted yes to Wii. The names patheticly embarassing but its just such a cool premise. As people look at the PS3 pricetag, their going to look next to it at the Wii and notice they can buy 3 Wiis for one PS3. I think the markets going to shift entierly to Nintendo for the nextgen market, witch is great because Id rather have a sword fighting game with a motion sensored handheld controller then more particle effects on some remakes of PS2 games. The great feature their adding to the controller is it can tell if its tilted. Great, one novelty game of a jet flying through pipes with obstacles can be made to componsate your 1,000$ upgrade. If you think about it, thats all your going to see. Another GT with more particle and lighting effects. Another MOH. Another Splinter Cell. Nothing new... Wiis going to have so much creative and overall fresh content for the american market, I think its really going to open up gaming to people who never did it much.
Im going from a sony fanboi, Nintendo hater to a Nintendo fanboi, sony hater. All 'cause the PS3.

I totally agree with you as well. Sony has full control over the gaming market, and they want to keep that control - and the money! - by any means necessary. They are completely oblivious to the fact that by jacking up the price of the PS3 so high, less people will buy it, and they'll lose control!
It looks like Nintendo have been given a big window of opportunity. That said, I don't see how the Nintendo Wii will sell either... why would anyone buy a console with controllers that look like TV remotes?!? I probably won't.

Well you know Sony's only pricing because they have to make money out of the deal but they won't be they will be losing. It cost them so much to make the system that they are pricing the PS3 $100 less than they should because it has to compete with Xbox360 but it isn't to make money because they are losing it big time.

Another reason for Sony's success of PS2 in Asia is that PS2 has been cracked for a long time and pirated games are readily available everywhere. Game manufacturers seldom take this into account but actually when we decide to buy a gaming console, we have to consider how expansive the games are. There is no use of buying a console with out games –since consoles are not PCs, which can serve many other purposes other than gaming. I think here in Asia, piracy is a very important factor that we take into account when buying a new gaming console.

Well i kinds of agree. They have total control to charge whatever they want. But with the 360 they know they have to beat the price with the system or with games or possibly even accesorries. But like you said sony ps2 was alot eaiser and been cracked alot longer. So now since the 360 is hacked and at first the ps3 won't be. So sony might lose some buisness who knows.

uh.. i think the pricing is right because ps3 is a very powerful console. The processor they use is as powerful as most processor used in PC today. As you all know that process are very expansive, let's set the price for the processor about $150 (reasonable enough?). Next comes the grahpic card, i haven't analyse the spec. for PS3 but from what i heard, the graphic is amazying. so i'm guessing the graphic card would price around $120+. So far with just the processor and grahpic card, that's half of the price for the PC 3. Also, they are going to embed the latest blue-rey disk drive, which will cost alot because it's so new. Let us say it cost around $100 for the disk drive.. that's $370. And another $150 for the other hardwares included in the ps3 (controllers, motherboard, case, ram.. etc. ). And of couse..they have to pay the employees money to develope the system, so it actually adds up to the price.
You just have to keep in mind that the better the console, the more expensive it will be because it's better. Better = better hardwares, faster processor = MORE MONEY to make = MORE MONEY CONSUMERS HAVE TO PAY.

I agree sony are very selfish, has anyone noticed that a year ago the specs of the ps3 were
But i read my friends magazine yesterday, they have cut the usbs down to 3 i think and diched rumble on the controllers wtf no rumble they have copied the xbox guide button and put a playstation guide button and come on $1000 for a console im sure that even taking into account all the new technology this must be a record on profit per console. I am awaiting the release to see realy how much "better" the ps3 is, imo the hype is just over the massive specs and the graphics wont be much different than the 360. Just my opinion.
