I found this and thought it was pretty cool.

Basically, its easy to use these objects in photoshop to make a great looking icon. Just open Photoshop and simply start out with a shape, like a circle... Then, add more layers to it by opening up the different borders and effects and adding them to the shape you chose. Its very simple, and if you play around... you can make some amazing things.
