There have been issues of MySQL downtimes.. but the main reason is that some members are trying to experiment stuff.

Some of the recent cases .
1> A member tried to send 50,000 emails ... while most of them were duplicate. I guess, to screw up the server. I had to delete his account.
2> Some one tried to put random stuff into mySQL database, and he put it into an infinite loop. That caused mySQL to HOG up since it was expected to execute unlimited queries.. The tmp size was filled and SQL was down.
3> Someone also tried to abuse JSP/ Tomcat which is THE MOST ADVANCED feature we provide, at the same time, it is also processor intensive. It was abused and the server went down completely. we had to restart the server to get things back to normal.

4> and there are many more such cases..

All I would request members is that, Please dont experement things or scripts on my server. There are a lot of members on it and any problems is going to affect all of them. Lets use the service together.. happily.

-Regards,
OpaQue.

This is really sad. One gets everything for free and abuse.. it might be very hard for admin to go and check this defaulters as members crosses above 5000. I can't understand this kind of people... they are not afraid of the consequences of this kind of crime....

I'm guessing they're competitors of Trap17 and are trying to mess with us.
Why would a whole bunch of people just suddenly decide to "experiment" with the MySQL databases? They're most likely a team of competitors that wants us dead...

Rise thread, service interruption breathes life into you....

With respect to gyad it seems unlikely to me that this is some sort of targeted attack from an outside group. Anybody from trap17 who gets fed up and moves to payed hosting will probably go to computinghost.

We'll see though, hopefully the pattern of abusive activity will be clear.

long live Trap17!

Ugggghhh. Stupid people abusing Trap17. I don't think it's an attack by a competitor though. I think it's just idiots.

It's really annoying when all these MySQLs are going down. I tried to install Xoops, but it said that it couldn't use a MySQL datababse (although it's working now).

But it's still amazing that Trap17 offers so any MySQL's. I mean, so many Hosts i've seen offer 5 MySQLs, even when it's $10.00 a month. Keep it up Trap17!

In the mean time, is there anything any of the non-abusive members can do to help?

Yes. Vote for trap17 in those sites that list free web hosts. If you do that, then more people will find trap17 -> there will be more ad-clicking -> more revenue for trap17 -> more money to buy resources -> more people will come -> (restart cycle).

The whole thing is very sad. Obviously there are people that don´t have more things to do apart from coming here to &%$# with trap17 great service. For all those hacker wannabes, you know that you suck.

To shadowdemon: I don´t think your intention was to harm Trap17 but think about it... ¿what´s the point in sending 50000 mails? You´ll probably get a server saturation or whatever. ¿Can´t you experiment with a lower number? We all have to take care of what we like and not play with everyone´s hosting.

I could see that some of those might by accident to some point, but the one were he sent out 50,000 + emails is just clearly an attack on the server. People try to promote their site by sending out alot of emails but none that go to duplicate addresses.

i have about 2,000 membrs on one of my forums, I had to re-write the way phpBB sent emails so that it would send 100 at a time, with breaks in between, that site is not on this server, but I want to point out that mass mailing can put ALOT of stress on any server. If you are going to mass mail, try to do it so that there are reequent breaks in between each group of emails you send, to relieve the stress on the server

I have also experienced those mySQL server downtimes these past days. but Opaque's post was made from Nov 14, 2004. So the recent downtimes may not have anything to do with those email spammers.

this happen few days ago and I was a little disappointed by your response time.

anyway, I hope you'll do it right.

You guys have to understand that the MySQL is very valnerable (omg I can't spell) to attacks. Trap17 doesn't put any type of limitation on it. Thus anyone is able to put in badly configured scripts or purposely putting it on to harm the server. The MySQL downtimes are always temporary anyways. Also, MySQL is only a small portion of your site. I assume that your other scripts are unaffected by the downtimes. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) Other places don't even offer MySQL.

I wonder if OpaQue can force those members who are abusing or misusing SQL to host their SQL on another host so that other members can use TRAP17 server with peace. I am getting tired of people thinking that it's TRAP17's server issue when over 99% of the time it's someone messing with SQL.

These operations that people perform on trap17, um can they perform these opearations on their own computer and its free too? I know you can install a database and server on your computer like apache or something. Would that be the same? or maybe trap17 is too good that it has lots of things?

Well Trap 17 offers such a great Hosting Service for us. And someone has to try and muck it around. But the true reality on this is that there will also be someone like that around everywhere you go. Wether it is some kiddie doing it for fun, wether it is a competer from another Hosting Server who really knows.

Honestly, people like that need to grow a brain and stop trying to ruin things for other members. We are here cause we like what we get, we like the people, for our own reasons. And I know for me, I have already had several people trying to get me to move to another Hosting Company, and I tell them the same thing all the time. "Sorry I am happy with Trap 17 and that is where I intend to stay. Thank you for the offer and have a nice day".

I can't believe that some members, or competitors, have the nerve to try and disrupt this free service. I also can't believe that somebody sent out 50,000 emails :P , there isn't even that many members here. Anyways I'm sorry about this user, or competitor, did this. I think their actions will be regretted whenever nobody likes their service :P

This is indeed a problem. So many of the website abilities are enabled that it makes it difficult on others due to e-mails, people running scripts to test the server's limits, and just messing around in general. I wish that people would be more considerate of this website. It's not just affecting trap17.com, but everyone else who has an account here as well. Things have improbed quite a bit I've noticed, so I hope it continues to stay this way into the 2006 new year.

Oh, by the way, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone! :D

Anyone who's decent will not have tried to send 50,000 emails at once with most being duplicate... the rules state that you must not do any mass emailing, and I think this qualifies...

Most likely you guys are right and these are reckless competitiors trying to destroy us. Or they're just some stupid people who want to mess with anything and don't give a darn about anything.

This is just something that makes you wanna use profanity, but I'm good enough to control my rage. But one question: how does dam count as swearing?

why don't these people do this to the competitors and test it on theirs so they don't screw ours up? :D just kidding. For basics like PHP, you can setup your own little test server cheap, but for advanced stuff, you probably have your own server allready... I remember when that happened, it happened frequently too. Well, Glad that's over...
