second, Did you try running a chkdsk before going in for the seatool ?
most of the time the problem is with the directory structure or some corrupt file and ppl start thinking that their hdds are busted
thirdly, when you run this CHKDSK, run it with both the option, I mean the 'automatically fix file system errors' and 'Scan and attempt to fix bad sectors'

thanks for the caring....
well, I would say the disk is working, but not stable. I don't know the reason.
I did run chkdsk, not one time, when I check both options, the process would stop unexpectedly. same problem happened when I use seatool to run test in pure dos mode...
perhaps, I had to change another disk for data safety.
anyway, thanks for help

No problems
I try to help ppl and some ppl think i am spamming
NEways.. I'll say since its a 500 GB it might take up time to analyze for bad sectors. Its a deep scan and does take a lot of time. I had an 80 GB and took around 5 hrs to analyse. it does not depend too much on the processor and other things. May be a SATA would take less time but still since its 500 GB I am assuming it would take like 4-5 hrs atleast for the surface scan.
I would suggest you get a backup and get the disk replaced.
By the way , assuming you have a partitioned drive this could be a problem with MBR. Could you try running a FIXMBR command using the recovery option on Windows boot disk. It might solve the problem. Give it a try before taking it for the replacement.

Also, if your hard drive is still under warranty, use it, and have the disk replaced... And of course, don't forget to get all the data you can from it...

Help For My Seagate Sata Hard Drive!
I have a 750GB seagate hard drive which I use as an external hard drive through usb cord since I'm using a laptop. Already I used to have some problems with delayed writing failed problems and never really got to solve it. Again today it said this and the hard drive just stopped working. Usually I just needed to restart it, but today it wont work. It'll turn on and my laptop notifies me that I have plugged in a usb but when I try to open it it says " the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" I have about 400gb of important stuff on it... Cant afford to lose it. Please help! thanks.

Sorry Dude your drive is screwed ..
The only chance to recover that data would be by using some lower level tool that can perform sector level recovery. Take help from Professionals if its really urgent. Even Seagate is offering their services for data recovery.
I Hope you get your data recovered. An Advice .. Next time you buy a hard-drive Don't go for Seagate. They have reduced their quality too much. Even one of my hard-disk failed and its not even six months..
I heard they are putting chinese parts in their drives.. May be thats the reason of the price cuts -- REDUCED QUALITY

Help For My Seagate Sata Hard Drive!
I bought a seagate 500gb with my new pc and after a video card crash the drive died, only 4 months old. I had it replaced under warranty but also bought a western digital 500gb to be my new primary drive.
A week ago I initialized the replacement drive and formatted it. Today I was getting ready to transfer data to it when and-Tune caused the video card to crash and windows to dump physical memory. Now the seagate HDD has died.
Is it just Seagate that sucks? Should I just insist on my money back?

I have a seagate external drive. I have had it for 6 months noproblems, then all of a sudden I let my room mate attach it to hislaptop to get some of my music and the next time I plug it into mycompter my comp completely freezes up.
No message appears, just a complete freeze. Then when I try toreboot, with the external still plugged into my comp, my bootup getsstuck at Initializing.. (the HDDs I'm pretty sure) and doesn't move. Ithen unplug my HDD from my comp and it runs fine.
Is this a virus I contracted from my friends laptop? If so(or not so) what is a way that I could attemp to fix this.
Maybe something changed because he has XP and I have vista?
I have my music collection which I have been building for thelast 7 years. This, among with many other things on there, I do notwant to lose!

CHKDSK is the worst thing you can use, it will chunk your files up into file1.Chk files. All CHKDSK wants to do is repair the file system, it doesn't care about your data. There is obviously a problem with bad sectors, the drive is dyeing. The trick is to duplicate your hard drive (see HD Clone.Exe free cloning utility that ignores bad sectors). Take it out of the USB enclosure and clone it to another drive equal or greater in size. Once you have the cloned drive, you can run GetDataBack from Runtime.Org. If you need additional help I can help, Data Recovery Lab. Or you can call me directly

First of all use any good data recovery software to recover your data.
second, check the SMPS power cable I mean there must be proper EARTHING.
third don't power your monitor from SMPS, use another power cable fromUPS
finally delete all partions and recreate them with FULL format not quickFormat.
Actually seagate's 500GB hard disk are very sensitive to POWER andEarthing,
and usually we think that there is some problem with Motherboard and HardDisk.
Still if problem persists then no choice but RMA.
Thanks.

I have a 500g seagate that stopped working here's some background info.
-Used on a windows xp
-Slave drive for media,
-Less then 1/4 full,
-One year old.
-Internal
Ive done everything on my end to recover the data, switched cables, switched motherboard inputs, tried my coolmax usb reader, tried seagate's hd wizard, read every forum out there and it looks like I'm screwed. The computer dosnt see the hard drive from bios to disk management. Like everybody else I have gigs of music and personal pictures that are on it. The hard drive just stopped accessing information for some reason it spins and makes a little bit of noise like its its trying to read but, the noise stops and it continues to just spin.
Before this incident I had no other problems with the hard drive. Seagate wants at least 1700 and up to 3500to recover the info, luckly I have two other hard drives with most of the information saved on them, but any info saved withen the last year is not on those hard drives my suggestion is to always backup your information and do it often, there is no such thing as a quality company out there anymore. I'm going to make one last effort and take it in to a local computer store for a free evaluation.

Failure rate on seagate is very high .. still people buy it because they give you a good warranty cover.
Maxtor WAS the best hard-drive manufacturer.. Sad Seagate bought it ..
Can someone suggest a better Hard-drive manufacturer coz I was hoping to buy a RELIABLE HDD for backing up my data .. preferably a 1 or 1.5 TB drive.. Price is not an issue

I hope this is the right place to ask this question.I wanted an external hard drive for additional storage space.I bought the Seagate Barracuda SATA 1tb 7200 rpm 32mb cache.I bought an enclosure with both usb and eSATA.I put the two together. Installed the sata connection in my computer, plugged in the drive and in My Computer the drive was not listed. It was listed in Device Manager.I put in the disk that came with the Seagate drive, installed the wizard software, and let it walk me through formatting the drive. Now the problem:It seems to run slowly. When I move a movie file from my hard drive to the external, the transfer speed seems really slow for a sata connection.I started copying over about 119gb of files and let it run overnight. When I woke up the computer had re-started, and the files had not transferred. Computer also told me a driver was missing in my Raid?Should I reformat the external using windows instead of the seagate wizard?I'm a newbie at this stuff and appreciate the help.Oh, I'm running Vista on an HP quad core with a 500gb internal drive. Thanks!

but also if you use or overload your hd then it might get screwed
so take care of your hd
