If I buy a domain using my myCENTs, will I be able to hide my personal info, like other registerars (sp) allow people to do? Thanks!

Very good question, actually. I didn't even know that you could hide that information. Always thought that information has to be transparent because it's like you showing your authority on your website. Otherwise when people look you're just like a random person.

I know name.com lets you hide it for free. I also think that it is illegal to put in false info..

It's illegal to provide false credit card information (fraud), but not really illegal just to put "None" or some "fake" details for your address etc. I put "None" in all the time when I register at something and it asks me to enter my address information. It is quite ideal if you don't want sites knowing your address information of where you live too. :P

And it never gets you into trouble. It's not illegal, so Police, FBI etc can't do anything to you. :)

I wouldn't think so because the xidomains would take your contact infor you have in the billing and auto fill that information as if you were buying the domain individually. So you could keep your contact info blank or fill it with n/a or blank or something like that to hide your information.

That's a good idea. I would rather not have people staking me and sending me mail all the time about how they want to buy my website for $XX,XXX.
Thanks for the tips!

What are the chances that people would really go through the work of tracing you down just to harass you like that?

It's not that hard to find most owners of websites anyways as most use the same usernames, emails, etc. on other sites, or they just post their contact information right there on the website.

Honestly if I was looking for information on something I would much rather go to a site where all of that information is listed publicly than one where it's hidden. It just gives the satisfaction of knowing that the person is transparent.

It's not technically illegal, but you are likely to lose your domain. You are required by the rules of domain registration to make sure that there are valid contact details available at all times for your domain. Putting "None" in all the boxes doesn't really help.

Actually many people would if they really want to buy the domain. When the movie came out, the owner of cloverfield.com got so many emails,, I heard he was trying to get thousands for the website.

Would Trap17 take it away? Even if I were to put in my correct details, and have them mask it, would that be ok?

I don't think it's up to trap17 to do that. I think ICANN is the one who removes your website if you do not provide information that is accurate.

I highly doubt ICANN would get involved with something like the wrong info, the website would have cause serious problems such as the piratebay, but even then ICANN only approve top level names and its up to the hosting providers to deal with problems like that.

So what is your suggestion for me to do?

Also, can an admin tell me if I will get my domain taken away (the site taking it away, not ICANN) if I put in bad info?

I'm not sure, I once ordered a top level domain with a different address than the address that was connected to the credit card I was using and ICANN shut it down.

Domains purchased via the new Credit System 3.0 have an option to add Privacy Controls for free.

Hey,

Some extra points in case you are still confused :-

1. Yes you can use domain privacy to hide your details from being seen. It is free and it is added during registration :)

2. If you provide wrong details you are sent an email warning you about the same. And I would recommend that you add your real details as it will not be seen by anyone but you and my team.

Ok thanks. I'll do that.
When it shows on whois, it will say something like "Masked" right?

I think it replaces your address, name, phone number, etc... with xisto's information. At least that is what it did for me.

*Edit*

Actually nevermind that, here is the information it replaces your information with:

I just realized something after it was mentioned to me, but when you customize your hosting package I do believe that if you select that ID protection for your hosting package. I do believe that will make your personal information private if you select that option, but I am not to sure about that yet unless one of those admin or velma can confirm that.

I will confirm that, yes, selecting the privacy option does, in fact, hide your personal information.

I can double confirm that after I purchase a domain this morning for a new site and I did a whois on the domain that purchase. So if you got a domain and your person information is your concerned then make sure to get the ID protection when you configure your package.

To galexcd:
Does ICANN moniter every single website out there?
Anyway, trap17 allows you to put information like "City: Montana" or "Address: Houston" or at least that is what BuffaloHELP said...

Is there any negatives to getting the ID protection thing? If not I don't see why they just don't make it come with the package instead of giving the choice of having it or not.

If you want to have the website up for sale ever, it will be harder to contact you.

No I don't think I will ever sell my site nor will anyone want to buy the piece of junk I call a website lol :)
In that case, if thats the only negative, I think I'll use the ID protection.
