A great WAV2MP3 converter is RazorLame.  You may need to download RazorLame, and LAME, check them out.

As for Music recorders: For Mac OS X and Linux there is Ardour http://softwaresanta...php?topic=978.0

Quote

Ardour is a digital audio workstation. You can use it to record, edit and mix multi-track audio. You can produce your own CDs, mix video soundtracks, or just experiment with new ideas about music and sound.

Ardour capabilities include: multichannel recording, non-destructive editing with unlimited undo/redo, full automation support, a powerful mixer, unlimited tracks/busses/plugins, timecode synchronization, and hardware control from surfaces like the Mackie Control Universal. If you've been looking for a tool similar to ProTools, Nuendo, Pyramix, or Sequoia, you might have found it.

Above all, Ardour strives to meet the needs of professional users. This means implementing all the "hard stuff" that other DAWs ( even some leading commercial apps ) handle incorrectly or not at all. Ardour has a completely flexible "anything to anywhere" routing system, and will allow as many physical I/O ports as your system allows. Ardour supports a wide range of audio-for-video features such as video-synced playback and pullup/pulldown sample rates. You will also find powerful features such as "persistent undo", multi-language support, and destructive track punching modes that aren't available on other platforms.

Or for Any Platform: Traverso DAW http://softwaresanta...php?topic=894.0

Quote

Traverso DAW

Is a GPL licensed, cross platform multitrack audio recording and editing suite, with an innovative and easy to master User Interface. It's suited for both the professional and home user, who needs a robust and solid DAW.

A complete suite

Traverso is a complete solution from recording to CD Mastering. By supplying many common tools in one package, you don't have to learn how to use lots of applications with different user interfaces. This considerably lowers the learning curve, letting you get your audio processing work done faster!

Of Course Audacity and Krystal are Excellent too!

There are quite a few freeware programs out there which do what you are after:
There is Switch, with a free and paid for version.
Another number of freeware programs to achieve your goal can be found here.
You will also find a forum discussion on CNET about the topic, which should give you some useful suggestions.

However, you say you use Audacity, has that not got a built in function to convert from WAV to MP3 too?
I seem to remember it does.

You could also have a look at LAME's Open Source MP3 encoder.

Hope that helps.

Try Audacity, you can get it on Downloads.com (CNET). You basically download it and its like 5mb and install it. After that you just click the big red button and you start recording :)

I use it for mixing though... you can make a instrumental out of a or an acapella or just autotune-ishy pitch up your voice! And i saw people on youtube who use it to make "chipmunk" style song videos... apparently they are popular.

Audacity is amazing! Along with multitrack recording, you can install endless numbers of VST/VSTi plugins that you can play around with to get different sound effects. For example, there are autotune plugins, VSTi plugins like Edirol Orchestra or Synthogy Ivory Pianos. I personally use Mastering and iZoTope plugins.
