What would you say that the best anitvirus is? My personal favorite is Kaspersky for Windows 7. It includes many features that most don't, like Intrusion Detection System and Stealth Internet Browsing. Post your thoughts on what you think the best anitvirus for Windows is.

I do agree with you, that kaspersky is a good antivirus...but it isnt the best. I found out that it cant remove most of the modern day viruses. Unfortunately I dont remember the name of the virus which I recetnly came across and this antivirus couldnt track it.

According to me, no antivirus is 100% dependable. And as far as the best is concerned I dont think any antivirus is best. All are good though!

No antivirus is 100% effective. Nowadays, more of the focus is generalized around malware, to include spyware, Trojans, and other malicious code.

Personally, I run Norton Internet Security Suite 2009 to give myself some sort of an illusion that my PC is secure. ;) I also utilize Panda's scan services and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware for full manual system scans just to make sure... and even then, I'm not 100% satisfied.

It still boils down to individual usage habits. If you indulge in risky behavior or peruse in popular attack venues (like social networking, sharing files with others, and even Internet shopping), you can fall for a lot of socially-engineered attacks, let a virus or Trojan into your system, etc.

I have created some dependence on kaspersky antivirus, although I switched to kaspersky internet security 2010, but kaspersky can't 't remove generally adware. But since I am using a vista home premium and I don't navigate lots of websites in the web, my computer is always safe. I never had problems with vista+kis together, while I used to have lots of problems due to virus and malware and adware to my ex computer(pc one) with xp professional. I always keep my computer up to date and never deactivate vista updates.

Although there a similar topic on trap17 already, apparently Bitdefender is the best anti-virus out at the moment (or at least it was a month ago). Kaspersky is really great but its guard feature caused a little fuss for me and corrupted Dreamweaver on my system (but my laptop is slow by today's standards).

I'd cast my vote for BitDefender too.It may not look cool or anything, but it gets the job done neatly. It's not really perfect, but no other AV is perfect, is it? BitDefender has worked like a charm for me so far. My primary OS is Ubuntu so I dont need any AV for that, but whenever I go into Windows for some gaming, I check on how BitDefender's doing and the results are satisfactory ;) Kaspersky's good, but why settle for the good when you're getting the best?

So far as per my observation, ESET NOD32 is one with less annoyance and good against viruses. Kaspersky and Bitdefender are good as well.Though i also keep "Spybot seach and destroy" and "Adaware" installed and run it frequently. Malwarebytes antimalware suite is also good to remove few malware off from computer. I find NIS(Norton) with poor performance on computers with less RAM. It eats lots of resource. and not effective against viruses and spywares.

I had McAfee for over a year, and I was pretty pleased with it for a while. My sister had the same program, and she got a virus though, and McAfee did nothing to stop it. See, that's the thing. An antivirus software may look good up front, but until you actually have a virus, it's hard to know how it'll stand up. McAfee didn't even have a way for me to quarantine or delete the file that I KNEW was infected, which was absolutely maddening. McAfee also gives you no way to flag any file as safe, so if McAfee thinks it's a virus, it doesn't matter if you know it's safe or not. I don't feel safe using McAfee anymore, thanks to that incident. Now I've been using Avast!, and it seems to work alright for now. As we know of course, I won't know unless I get a virus. (And I certainly hope I don't). Avast! is good though, in that it does allow you to quarantine infected files manually, and choose to ignore warnings, so I am pleased with that. It also plays some fancy sound effects when it finds a virus, it's skinnable, and it looks like a media player, so I love it.

I would root for bit defender - it tops the charts on all aspects and although some may say its not user-friendly i would still say it's the best compared to the others.

I think that ESET anti-virus is one of the best for such a price and it's really powerful, as I know several companies which don't have any problems with viruses where eset is installed on the main comouter and is protecting all the computers, also ESET seems to be light and powerful, where kaspersky might slowdown your computer a lot for no reason, due to different technology.

For free antivirus for personal use I think that Avast is one of the best and of course even better anti-virus is to not get any viruses at all, don't use cracks, don't open unknown files, email attachments and so on, and don't browse porno or crack sites, as usually there's nothing good there anyway.

Some people use a virtual machine to check for files having an installation of XP, if everything works, they continue to use it on their main desktop. :P

I have installed Kaspersky antivirus in my PC.Kaspersky is best antivirus for windows 7. It automatically detects viruses. But it will work properly if you updates it everday.
You can opt for norton 2011. But it slows down the speed of your PC. So best option is Kaspersky.

The question is what you mean exactly. Do you mean a program that runs on the computer constantly to avoid an infection of the computer with a virus? Or do you mean a program to detect a virus that is in your computer?

Personally I'm not a big fan of Antiviruses , I think they're a waste of your RAM memory (especialy if you don't have as much as you would need) ,but for the sake of it , from what people say on the Internet NOD32 seems to be pretty good. I can't give a personal opinion since I've never used it because each copy I've tried was requesting a serial Key which I didn't own.

In my opinion installing an antivirus software is required only when you feel your PC is infected and requires a full scan to clean up everything , other then that , in the rest of the time a firewall is more then enough considering it uses a lot less resources and is just as eficient. Kaspersky (hope it's spelled right)which also is recomended by alot of people doesn't have my trust since a year ago when I installed it on my old pc (1900+ , 512 RAM) after a fresh Windows XP reinstall and it just completely ruined everything. My PC completely froze and didn't recover after restart .. at start up it was stil frozen so I had to reinstall my windows and tried a normal Firewall , my choice was Sygate Firewall because at the time it seemed to be a good one and never had problems with it since then.

To be honnest no mather how much "protection" you use for your PC it stil won't be enough if you surf the web without knowing what risks are on diferent websites. In time we all learn what's the best solution for our Way of using the PC. For example .. a good way to keep your pc safe is before opening a fresh downloaded software from the internet is to upload it on one of those Free online scaners and check to see if it's infected or not. I usually use jotti.. google it if you need it.
It instantly scans your file with over 15 Antiviruses and tells you if it's safe. It has never let me down so far.

Stay Safe.

if you ask me, NOD32 is the best in many areas
  • Uses less then half the resources as most anti-viruses
  • Has a really high detection rate
  • Very user-friendly

I heard that recent norton is less resource hungry. I didn't tested it on mahcine with 512mb ram so i can't come to any conclusion. so those with low ram can tell us if it is in anyway improved from previous antivirus. In any case i'll not risk my system for norton.

Hello mahesh,
I have 2 * 512 mb ram and using Norton Internet Security 2011, and so far I haven't face any slowdown from the side of norton internet security, it is running smoothly in background.
Although, if there is anything slowing down my pc is firefox, I usually access more than 5-6 times at a time, so have 5-6 tabs open in same window, and it is slowing down my pc. Sites are loaded fast but, switching from one tab to another tab is taking time, and sometimes it is just stuck at one tab only. According to the resource monitor of NIS 2011, the firefox is using a lot of memory, the warning is shown time to time.

Thus, I conclude by saying that NIS 2011 is not resource hungry, it is just working fine at least in my pc.
So, my best security suite for windows will be NIS 2011. ;)

2 Units of 512 ? In that case just remove one and run the norton for month or week to see the performance. I guess that is the only way to test the performance. Current 2 units of 512 makes your ram go at 1 gb and few MB less than that. so test again with single unit so that you can conclude it is not being resource hungry.

Well, I guess I could do that, but, at the moment I really need more power and more ram, I can't decrease the ram memory at least for now, because I am having vacations and I am using my pc a lot these days and its already slowing down despite of having 1 gb ram, so you can imagine how badly my pc will be affected now if I reduced the ram now.

But, once I get over with my vacations and my pc usage will be back to normal, then surely I would love to reduce my system ram to test out the norton internet security 2011 performance.

But, for now, its really not possible :(

I used to like ESET anti virus, but for a year now I am using the free antivirus from microsoft and it seems to be very good and FREE, even though it seems that microsoft products can suck, but seems that this one works quite fine:

http://www.microsoft...ity_essentials/ - Microsoft Security Essentials, it's free for all home users, but you need to have a genuine windows installation for it to install :)

As far as i know MSE is not replacement for the antivirus. No doubt it catches most of the viruses but it is not effective against rootkits, malware and other browser viruses. I don't know how you managed to work with MSE. I do have it installed but i prefer to use it with NOD32, malware bytes antimalware byters and spybot search and destroy.
