I love to work in the night and I m a fan of birds. So hearing bird sounds is my hobby...

And this laptop sound irritates my brains... it feels, I m sitting next to a SPACE SHIP.

So my point is, Which the the most SILENT / quietest laptop in the WORLD?

Please give your opinions and comments.

** now i m planning to get a DJ equipment and scratch some music listening to birds... bye bye :)

Firstly I think you are HIGH :), Anyway I would say a low powered laptop would be the quietest as It would produce less heat therefore the fan wouldn't have to run as much.

I find my laptop, an ASUS K61LC, to be extremely quiet - it hardly makes any noise at all.

Come to the League of Men who work in the Night Alone. Are you talking about Centrino Technology?

First of all, instead of considering buying a new laptop, you should try to get a Laptop Cooler, it should cool the laptop so that the fan is not that loud or you should use the laptop inside a AC room (or outside when its snowing :D). Laptop Coolers are a great way to help you keep your laptop cool, and it also shown to increase Laptop life. You should get a laptop cooler from Logitech, Xpad or Antech, these are trusted companies and trusy me, their products work :)

Also, rather than buying a different laptop or buy a laptop cooler you can make your current laptop more silent by some simple tricks. Try installing a program called SpeedFan and adjust the settings so that it can control your fan's speed but don't put it too high (or your battery life will die) and don't put it too low (it can fry the motherboard!) the default settings work fine.

There is also the cheap method (and very effective method) of putting a small bit of tap over the air vent on your laptop. It is proven to work (I actual tried it) and it doesn't overheat your laptop, it just makes it slightly hotter but the humming and hissing sounds disappear. Here's how you do it:

Take a small bit of of tape (duct tape, scotch, yellow tape, etc.) and any other tape (except packaging tape :P). Tape it to the side of the air vent. Not to much to the side though. Make sure that there are no holes in the tape. The circulation of air should be restricted away from the tape. It should make the laptop much quieter.

You should also try putting the 'Power Plan' of your Laptop to 'Power Saver'. It doesn't affect the Laptop performance that much. You can do it by clicking on the Plug and Battery button on the right-bottom side and going to 'More Power Options'. Then in the bottom choose 'Power Saver'.

IF all else fails and you WANT A NEW LAPTOP (:D) than I would suggest buying the dell e1705, sony sz, dell e1505 Sony Pcg nvr , toshiba libretto, etc. I just ask the guys at the computer store and you get advice from them, usually the A8J's are the most silent of the rest. With the A8J's I could play a hardcore MMO-RPG game and not even feel a vibration of the laptop (except the speakers, of course.)

Or you can try turning the FAN OFF! HAHA... Just kidding ! :P

I'm not a big fan of Apple computers but the Mac Book is the only one that I've come across that is pretty quiet. Almost silent.

I have a Netbook when I'm travelling, that's also quiet. Well most of them are good for bird watching!

First, there are two separate and significant components to this question:

1. What is the BASELINE noise level of the laptop? (i.e., boot it up, and see how loud it is). Most business-class laptops, macbooks, netbooks, and low-power laptops will perform well in this test.

2. What is the noise performance UNDER LOAD, and how fast does it get there? (i.e., boot it up, start streaming video, playing a blu-ray, doing 3D rendering, film editing, multi-track audio, demanding video games, etc, and THEN check the noise performance).

What happens is, as you put more strain on the CPU/GPU, the components run hotter and the fan speeds up. Plus mechanical noises from the spinning hard drive, DVD drive, etc. Almost all laptops will run noticeably louder under load, and some very quiet ones actually become very loud under pretty moderate load (i.e., playing hi-res video). This significantly complicates the question, because you need to balance what you actually plan to use the laptop for against noise performance under those conditions. If all you do is typing documents and email and casual web-browsing, no problem. But if you want to stream video, play games, do media editing, or run lots of applications at once, your "quiet" laptop might start to sound like a jet turbine. In that case, you will want to look for a laptop that either remains quiet while maxed out (very rare), or else look for a laptop that has enough horsepower overhead that you will only rarely or never push its limits.

This is especially important for people doing media editing or audio production. For example, trying to record music with a howling, over-stressed laptop.

A good site that routinely tests noise levels under multiple conditions is http://www.notebookcheck.net/

You can use their "Purchase Consultation" link to select the criteria for the laptop you want (including noise/heat "emissions"), and get a list of laptops that have tested well.

My old HP dv1060 died. I bought an HP G6 with an i3 processor for $400, with very good performance for the dollar as a replacement. Too bad its freekin loud! The G6 does not have a quiet mode, but it does have a restore to factory install functionality. I restored, took it back to the supply store, then went shopping at BestBuy. There you can see that Apple makes the best laptops and has set the standard in form and function. I own too many Windows based programs to migrate to Apple. Fortunately, others are trying to catch Apple. My personal choice was to pay $1000 to get a Samsung Series 7 laptop with an i7 processor and a Radeon graphics card and hope for the best! I was not disappointed! Aluminum case, solid hinge, back lit keyboard, a silent mode. OK, so it is 20+ times faster than the old laptop I'm replacing that was very quiet when working with, even when it was flat on my chest when I'm in bed! This new laptop is just as quiet, even when in bed and I plug the vent holes. Propping up the laptop is not needed. Who says money can't buy happiness! Processing power AND quietness! Best buy has other options, including tablet computers with removable keypads that are even more quiet, and they have Apples too! Go to freekin Best Buy and get help! The kids there were so knowledgeable. I know how to build gaming tower computers from scratch and I could tell these kids new their stuff and they were very honest and patient with me as I listened to so many laptops. Go to Bestbuy and cough up some cash. It is the way for you o quiet one!
