Simple Shopping Site Software (In The Making)

25 April 2012 - 05:35 AM

Hi!

Last month, I spoke to Mr_Dee about starting off a simple shopping site software and after having to put it off because a paper was due and later because I had to work on a paid gig (I've got bills to pay and a family to support too), I finally got about to putting up the foundation stones and getting a simple system that supports Paypal payments. Nothing fancy, but just enough for the average entrepreneur to get started with a web presence.

The software is PHP based and runs through a browser. It would be able to run on the Computing Host / Xisto web hosting. It uses the Code Igniter framework and should meet the needs of firms that need to put up a catalog of about a dozen or so products and the ability to accept Paypal payments online for single-product orders. Sure, it does not do most of what commercial software and most open source software out there, but that's what makes this software easier to setup and get started with. Perhaps when the orders start pouring in from the web store, you can get some mods or plugins to have it scale up to more requirements and can even sponsor the development of add-ons for the project.

I was wondering if anyone else here on Knowledge Sutra would like to join in. If you would like to have any features, if you have any code that you would like to contribute, if you would like to test the software, or if you would simply like to use the software for your own web store, post your reply to this thread and we'll see how we can move forward from there.

Flakes, Carbs, And Fat

09 April 2012 - 03:35 AM

Today I had Kellogg’s “Special” corn flakes for breakfast. It isn’t the one with the picture of a chicken on the box, but the one with a red ‘K’ and a bowl of corn flakes and wheat. The box also mentions that it is ninety eight percent fat free. Let me take a step back and say that it isn’t really corn flakes but instead it is wheat flakes that looks exactly the same as corn flakes but is instead made of wheat. I don’t know how that makes it healthier, but apparently it is one way to reduce fat content. The next question that comes to mind is that when Kellogg’s claims that the box of wheat flakes is ninety eight percent fat free, the cereal contains primarily carbohydrates and fibre. When you eat more fibre, you get that full feeling without consuming too many calories. Carbohydrates are what give you energy for your body to use in the short term but what you need to realize is that when you consume more carbohydrates that your body is able to use up, your body converts the carbohydrates into fat so even if you are not eating food that is rich in fat, your body converts the carbohydrates into fat. The idea with most diet plans is to make fibre comprise a large portion of your food intake so you do not go hungry and you consume less fat and carbohydrate in the process. It means that the sugar-frosted Kellogg’s cornflakes are a definite no-no when on a dieting plan. A challenge with most diets is to ensure that you are also getting the right amount of protein because if you do not consume enough protein, you would not have much muscle build-up. When you are on a diet, you have a good chance of avoiding fat – that is something you want to do because fat takes longer to burn down that carbohydrate. Think of the case where you light a single thin strand of thread and when you light a bunch of threads spun together. The single thin strand of thread burns with the flame reaching almost instantly at the other end of it whereas when you use a bunch of threads, the flame takes more time to get from one end to the other, in a fashion almost similar to that of a match stick. Taking this analogy and applying this to better our understanding of what differentiates carbohydrates from fats, think of carbohydrates as a single strand of thread and fats as a whole bunch of threads put together. You can also think of fat as a more concentrated form of energy so if you were to consume the same amount of fat in weight as a certain amount of carbohydrate, you would have to work harder to get through all of the calories that you take in the form of fat.
When I finished a bowl of Kellogg’s special wheat flakes (I have not heard of anyone refer to a cereal as wheat flakes, but if there are corn flakes and there are bran flakes, there certainly must be a need for the term wheat flakes, unless bran flakes refers to the wheat flakes that I had for breakfast), I did have a feeling of full-ness but at the same time I did notice that I had something that was rather sweet, so I presume the box of Kellogg’s special cereal contained some sugar too. Sugar isn’t fat, but it is a whole lot of carbohydrate that the body can turn into fat and so it is going to take me a whole lot of work to ensure that I do not put on a few extra pounds around the sides.

General Motors Becomes Top Auto Manufacturer

17 February 2012 - 08:37 AM

This year has seen some interesting news headlines, and its still only February. One of the articles I have read on Forbes.com is that General Motors is the world top auto manufacturer in terms of automobile sales. After three years of losing its crown to Toyota, General Motors had to deal with a huge debt, which it managed to reduce through bankruptcy.

Toyota's problems with brakes and 'sticky' accelerators probably had a large part of play in General Motors' success and in the business world, that isn't anything you can hold against General Motors because it could have happened to any of the big three. There are crash reports of crash testing dummies getting severed in test reports against Chery and some other manufacturers, but they still keep going and have loyal buyers who perceive the cost advantage as their key selling point.

Wordpress The_Date()

24 November 2011 - 03:59 AM

If you are a newbie at WordPress theme development, you would no doubt have looked at using the_date() in displaying the dates for each of the posts on a blog. The function has the same naming convention as the_title(), the_author(), and the_content(), so it seems like the most logical choice of WordPress API functions to display the date of a post. However, what many new theme developers do not know is that the the_date() function will only display unique dates. What I mean is that when a date is displayed on a post, if the following post has the same date, the the_date() function does not display the date. This may seem weird but that is the way it works. Perhaps somebody who does not want to display the dates over and over again would find this function useful but for the rest of us, we want the dates to be displayed for each and every post, such as in the post metadata that appears below the title of each post or below the article itself. The solution here is to use the get_the_date() function and echo the return value instead of calling the the_date() function.

The get_the_date() function can also be substituted with the the_time() function with a date format parameter. The the_time() function can also be used to output the time in addition to the date, so if you are looking for the time of the post too, the the_time() post is what you are looking for.

Nokia E72 - Electronic Failure After A Year?

19 November 2011 - 09:32 AM

I have had the Nokia E72 for almost a year now and it has been running without a single crash or hang for over a year. Recently, it has started developing electronic glitches - the home screen sometimes goes blank but the menus are still visible. Phone calls aren't hung up while the screen goes blank. It's almost as though someone yanked out the memory card... when that happens, the wallpaper disappears leaving the theme's background color but in this case the background color appear white instead of with the theme's color.

The problem only occurred once, but I see my Nokia E72 going the way of my iPhone - the iPhone crashes, hangs, displays the grey apple screen for a couple of minutes, and sometimes even refuses to do anything except answer calls - all of these are fixed by a reboot but it is annoying to have a phone do that to you.

So far, all of my phone purchases have been because the phone quits working or stops operating normally so I guess the time has come for a new phone. I might hold on to the Nokia E72 for another few months before putting it in the bin and getting another phone. It feels unethical to sell something that you know does not work perfectly but some people still do it - I'd rather just leave it in the recycling bin for the cell phone company to salvage whatever they can and make a new cell phone.

Does anyone else have the year-long expiry of their smart phones or do your phones get lost or trashed long before the electronics within give up?
